Roadside help...

If you guys were to build a roadside "first aid" kit for your truck what parts extra parts would you include? just trying to start thinking about this because i plan to take my truck on some long road trips in the fall and id like to be a bit prepaird. so all the guys that have been driving and working on these trucks for years feel free to chime in with what you think would be good to store in the tool box of one of these trucks...

Re: Roadside help...

cellphone and credit card// water/ basic handtools/small floor jack/ pieces of wood 2x4 and 4x4's// a length of sturdy rope or chain/ duct tape and wire/ candy bars/small poly tarp// all are good but the best is to spare no expence in the upkeep and updating of your truck

all of these are pretty good things, anyone ever carried anything unusual that helped get them through a jamb?

Extra rocker arm locknuts. I had one back off while driving. It was also the last time I'll ever use anything but poly locks on a rebuild.

I've also heard of rocker arms breaking so an extra one of those might do in a pinch.

Assorted fuses, test light, battery terminal/cable end cleaning tool, wire brush.

I'm also going to put in another plug for AAA membership.

Edit: Just saw another post that reminded me of something. WD40 is good for drying out a distrbutor cap.

My throttle cable broke in front of a livestock supply. Now I carry baling wire.

Re: Roadside help...

Also, I keep my old points and condenser. I had the wire break on a brand new condenser and replaced it with the old one on the side of the road.

It helps to have a blanket to throw over the engine when you have to lay on top of it.

Dimmer switch. No headlights. Usually you can click it several times to get either high or low beams but it sucks if you're driving and try to switch and get nothing.

After installing new headers, the primary wire from the solenoid to the coil burned through and left me stranded until I could figure it out.

I now carry some primary wire, a digital multimeter, connectors and a crimping tool.

(choke)... HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

It sounds like my dad was packing for this trip - The only guy I know who used 250 feet of clothes line to tie a push mower onto a snowmobile trailer...
His favorite reply was, "Have I ever lost one?"

I think it would be easier to just have your destination shipped to you... considering how much fuel it'll cost for the double trailered semi that will be following you with all your stuff.... Then again, if you have that much room, why not toss in a 4 post lift and a pit while we're at it!

think about it... think about it... here it comes.... a pit? I'm going to have to log off before everyone comes to my office to see what's so funny!

It sounds like your dad was one heck of a smart man! i haul parts for the salvage yard i work for and id always rather have them overly strapped to the flatbed than underly strapped. one of the guys i work with had a full size ford van bumper fly off the truck at 70mph once..... didnt hit anybody thank god but the bumper was a bent up wreck!
