The ole 350 budget build.....
I must say had it not been for this forum and some of the great advise here , I would never started this restore-build. I wasn't planning on becoming disabled when I bought this '71 but is nice to have something to keep me busy and out of the house.
Got a short video here and a few pictures of the progress the wife and I have made. |

Great progress Richard! It looks like it has really turned into a family project. I can't wait to see the end result.
Keep it up!

Re: The ole 350 budget build.....
Wow ,I can't believe it has almost been another year. The idea I had was to just put a slick little budget 350 in this and well I guess I am over budget
The engine somehow morphed into a aluminum headed all new , accept for the block , 383 - 425 hp ish gas gussler . Behind it is a Monster 700r 500 hp trans and I built the rear end with an Eaton 342 posi. Completely redid the suspension with a 2-4 drop The frame is black and any part that moves on the suspension is the same blue as the truck. There is a lot of detail to it but is very rewarding. Get this , the cab is now off the frame and on a dolly and Although I have everything to retrofit the ac , I'm going to shave the firewall and go with Vintage or Oldair. (notice in the pictures the fire wall is already done) I'm also shaving all the drip rails , pretty much have the doors done and with the cab on a dolly I can finish the top out. I'm going to post some pictures here but please keep in mind I lost my hard drive last winter and some things are not in order. |

Re: The ole 350 budget build.....
Ok,another thing that got in my way was this 55 , I knew I wasn't close on the 71 so this seemed like a good idea
And a special thanks to Bad67-72 for all the help and of course the wife , uh my wife. New crate 350 , ac , performance 350 turbo etc. The Vintage air is what convinced me to ditch the original ac on the 71. Tony and I have scratched each others back a lot to get things done for each other. His Sweet pea truck is slick , a lot of sweat in that pea. |

Re: The ole 350 budget build.....
Glad to see you FINALLY posting some of the awesome work you have done to the 55 and the 71.....I have to say the 55 is my Favorite, (That body style is by far my favorite even over the 67-72s......I hope to get one ,one of these days......And i will be coming to you for answers.)....and with all the work you've done to it to make it right....It is awesome (other than those tires)...And the 71.....Not to many people would have ever tore that thing down.....But its glad to see that its getting the love its deserved....And getting done RIGHT i might add.....That cab required a lot of work, and know how.....None the less its shaping up nicely....And i cant wait to see it all done.......OK OK enough of the mooshy stuff......YOU SUCK......these hidden cameras you have stashed around to take unsuspecting victims pictures is beyond me.....And one more thing.....YOU SUCK again......That cab dolly is the cats ass.......And i remember a certain young man (ME) asking for tips for making a cab dolly. And as i recall a (tilting) of the cab was never mentioned. I see now i will have to tear mine apart and turn it into matter stakes .But i will give ya some credit.......That thing was built to last.......And i cant wait to borrow it...............................

I appreciate all the kind words guys , here is a few more pics of progress starting with the bottom of the cab. The guy working has cancer and is over here trying to get a few bucks plus get out of his house. After he got it all clean and prepped I plug welded all fuel line holes etc. and then Dave neatly used 5 cans of 3M sound deadener to coat it . We are completely stripping the cab ,first roughing it up and then using Kwik Clean to take it the rest of the way down. I can't tell you enough how sweet that cab dolly is and a special thanks to 63sbssbbw for showing his , I just changed it a little here and there. And the best thing this week is SAFE heat , ummm toastiee

Re: The ole 350 budget build.....
Just a few more pics of inching along progress . I'm gonna finish up the rusted roof on the front. I won't say it is hard but I will say it is time consuming and a real brain buster. One of my other toys is this bag SWMBO made for me so I could pound out (shape) the metal.

Re: The ole 350 budget build.....
Nuke I was simply in denial about that rust until I removed the header and windshield and then gave it an OMG , but that was after I had done all the lower work and figured there is no turning back. When the new header goes back I can fill all the voids where the windshield goes. The top patch is going pretty well ,I have to pull it over with clamps to form it the way I want it and tack ,cut the adjoining metal , tack again , cut the first and re-tack. Since all of it is exposed I believe I can stretch or shrink with heat from in or out.

Re: The ole 350 budget build.....
Actually yes , I decided to completely shave the firewall and may go as far as puttin the MC on the frame under the cab. Speedo and the rest all electronic.
Tip of the day; Get a uni-bit and some electrical boxes and snag the knock out plugs to fill in the holes in the firewall. Drill to correct size.

Re: The ole 350 budget build.....
I have done what to some does not seem a lot , like finishing the frame. Finished it with Por-15 and coated that with single stage black. Also put elongated exhaust pipe holes in the rear cross member to hide the pipes.
Next I decided I needed more space to put all the goodies so i added on to my shop and extended the new roof to the existing one. The main thing is in this is the frame and drive train is done except for the exhaust and fuel cell. Oh ,I forgot to mention my new tool.

Re: The ole 350 budget build.....
Man picture posting is giving me fits here so I will try again. First is the elongated holes in the rear member ,I did them this way because of the flex I think the bed needs with the frame.
The next shots are the inside of the cab for the brakes. Wipers that I had to move and the new fuse block. Oh and the vacuum pump for the brake booster. More pics coming.

Re: The ole 350 budget build.....
If you look close in the first pic you can see the where the vac pump is and the second pic is where the wiper motor is mounted.
The next pictures are me coming up with ideas on how to do the dash panel. I'm kinda leaning towards the raised bow tie that I will fab out of sheet metal. I have enough glove box doors to maybe come up with something different by grafting them together.

Re: The ole 350 budget build.....
If anyone has any feed back on the above post last two pictures of my dash plans , I'd like to hear it. I would like to keep it as "down to business" in the cab. I can graft the edges of the glove box doors and put a flat panel in the center .....
The next pics show whats going on with my shaved bear claw doors and the fire wall. Not sure if you can see them or not but the MC reservoirs are in the cowl plenum.

Re: The ole 350 budget build.....
I still need ideas ,thanks.
Here are a few more shots of the bear claw install. I used 1/4" rod to form the curve and it came out really nice. Now I'm shaving the door handle and lock. Also swapped out the top of the new door with the old door which I will get pics of. In the third pic ,what is the best way to fill the fact slop spot welding?

Re: The ole 350 budget build.....
This my mock-up drawing for my dash panel whether I use glove box doors or just a flat panel. I will fab the bowties out of sheet metal to get the visual angle I want. Kinda thinking I don't want the bowtie on the right , just a flat panel.
I do like the bomber gauges though but may have to color the bezels to suit. In case anyone is curious that is drawn to half inch scale.
