rearend question

I had to completely disassemble my 12 bolt rear for the powdercoaters including the pinion gear. So I got a estimate from a local shop to get everything in the pumpkin back together with new bearings, crush sleeve, everything from a typical rebuilt kit. They want about $300 for parts and labor. Is this average?

Re: rearend question

If you don't have a posi carrier, you might as well have them toss one of those in there as well since you are paying for the set up costs.

Re: rearend question

I have heard of people getting it for $200 but in Minnesota is runs right at $300. I couldn't find anything less when I had a posi installed in a Dana 60.

I guarantee someone on this board has one they are wanting (or willing) to sell. I found mine here (parts page) and I wasn't even actively looking for one nor was it posted for sale, but I just couldn't pass it up.

Post a WTB since you are currently "blue". Most want the entire rear end and understandably no one wants to ship one, but since you have to set it up anyway and just need the carrier, you don't have any limitations at all. I'd say about $200 bucks + shipping and you are all set for a used one. Don't skip it, it's not a lot of addtional money and if you are going through all the cost to set it up anyway, this is one of the few upgrades that you need to do it right the first time as it makes no sense at all otherwise as an open rear end is less than $100 complete.

Re: rearend question

The shop I used to work for charged 400 or so for a rebuild using all of your parts. Sounds like a good deal (as long as they do it right)

Re: rearend question

make SURE you measure and record your ring gear back lash & pinion bearing preload torque so when you reset-up your gears your can put them back EXACTLY as they came apart. this is very important.

oopps. too late for that. I took everything apart for the poweder coaters without knowing. I did at least keep everything in the proper order and placement.
