What state has the worst rust???

Hey guys,
I've been thinking of shipping out our trucks from sunny California. I stopped by the local pick and pull today and saw 3 completely rust free trucks heading to the crusher. A 67 long bed, 70 4 wheel drive and a C-20. Broke my heart seeing our trucks turned into Hyundai's.

Which of our great states has the worst rust and would appreciate a shipment of some solid metal???

Re: What state has the worst rust???

any midwest state, i would say. the salt on the winter roads do a number on sheetmetal.

like Wisconsin. i'd like some nice, fresh, clean, straight, rustfree sheetmetal! yup! haha

Re: What state has the worst rust???

My guess would be from Minnesota and East...
Although here in the Dakota's we do have rust, it's nothing like what Minnesota or Wisconsin gets... and I've heard the farther East you go around the Great Lakes and into Pennsylvania and New York it gets worse...
I've never been on the East side of the Mississippi River, so I could be all wrong. I have just heard this from a guy locally that sells antique project cars/trucks (pre-60's stuff) and he says most of his stuff goes to these area's.

Ohio is horrible. New York and Pennsylvania also.
Ohio is so bad, Rust is NOT an option. It is STANDARD equipment on each vehicle.

Re: What state has the worst rust???

The worst rust is where the most people are. The reason roads get salted is that if you have 1,000,000 people commuting to a metro area and it is slippery, you have tons of accidents. Most people are east of the Mississippi, not including the left coast.

In less populated areas salt is used to keep the sand in the sanding truck from freezing. Have you ever seen the beach or a sand box below the freezing point? All the moisture in the sand binds it up. This then couldn't be spread where you want it.

You'll probably need a GOOD friend on the other side. Talk with a pal you have out east of the Mississippi somewhere then try to solve how to ship the stuff.

You should be able to make a few bucks.

Re: What state has the worst rust???

Pennsylvania is HORRIBLE!!! See here in Pittsburgh our winters use to be ALOT worse than they are now... BUT now the guys in the salt trucks spread the same amount of product no matter what!! You know its bad when after the first two or three small snows its all over the news that the state road department is running out of salt! 1 inch of snow... two inches of salt!

Re: What state has the worst rust???

Spent 35+ years on the canadian border in NY - I'm suprised the dealers didn't just cut the floor boards out and trim the edge off all the wheel wells before they sold the cars... that way, you could see what they would look like by the next spring. If you removed the sheet tin or plywood, most vehicles up there were flintstone mobiles!

Re: What state has the worst rust???

Cities in Gulf coast states also have a lot of rust. I've seen cars in Corpus Chrisiti rust as you watch them (almost). The salt spray from the coast and from what I hear, night dew and fog from the ocean, contribute to it. And this is year round not just in winter.

My brother in law had a nice 2 door Chevy II SS on his driveway that he "was going to fix up" and wouldn't sell it. Everytime I went to visit, it was eaten up more than the last time. I saw it rust up until he had to sell it for scrap...

Re: What state has the worst rust???

Missouri was pretty bad when I lived there due to salt. Texas is MUCH better, although stuff still does rust out, but nowhere near as much as it did in MO. One of my friends just bought a '79 F*rd F-100, and the whole truck only has 2 rusts spots on it, above the driprails...everywhere else is sold. If it was a MO truck the floors would be gone, along with the wheelwells, and who knows what else..

Re: What state has the worst rust???

I'm from PA so I know it's pretty bad there but I would say Jersey is the worst, especially along the shore. They get a double whammy. Salt air from the water and salt on the roads in the winter time.

You could always spot a Jersey car when I was a kid. It was the one with half fenders and rust rings on the roof and hood.

Houston's pretty bad too though. I've gotta be careful with my tools out in the garage. Must be the humidity.

Re: What state has the worst rust???

My vote is for Missouri. Seems when it snows here the state shuts the highways down until there is only salt, no roads. My 71 has all new sheet-metal now, so she doesn't ever see snow, let alone salt. Seems to be a summer truck. yeah yeah I know i baby my truck, but after 6 years of restoration, I think I'm going to not put her in harms way, if possible. LOL, my '88 chevy and my '92 Pontiac Grand Prix are total rust buckets. Yeah i think rusting to old Prix is a lot better than my '71 C-10!!!!!!!!!!

Re: What state has the worst rust???

I have seen a lot of trucks from all over the country. N.E. and the mid West normally win the prize. However............the worst body rust I have ever seen on a 67-72 was on a 1968 long bed I bought for the running gear. I came from Monteagle Tn. and spent its whole life there. Ther is not 1 good piece of metal left on it!!!!!

Its still in the back yard rusting........soon to go to the crusher!!!!

I grew up in PA and joined the navy to see..............RUST everywhere! here in CT they use salt like in PA, combined with the humidity, fog, Its pretty bad! My Blazer frame is "shedding" truck DNA all the time.

If we could find a cheap way of getting those trucks east, we could use them all!

Re: What state has the worst rust???

Where I work, we used to rebuild P/30 trucks for Frito Lay (PepsiCo) and we got them in from all over the US into our shop.
The absolute worst of the worst that we saw was Illinois, Indiana, New york, Ohio, then PA.
People from virginial and kentucky and tn claim to have it bad, but they need to take a road trip to the great lakes area. They'll cry.
There is a company that has been doing the south west trucks to the midwest, and they've been at it for at least 9 years. I came across www.rustfreeclassics.com back in '99. They seem high priced untill you figure in the service they provide... they can save you a bunch of money back here in the rust belt.
It would be rough to start off with. You'd need a someone back east to sell them, a way to advertise, and the web is about the only way to do it. Just opening a lot in a city bragging about old rustfree stuff wouldn't work... it'd flop in less than a year.
