power steering conversion
I have no p/s on my 67. I just put new 255/70/15 tires on the front and will be rebuilding the suspension as well.
I want to upgrade to p/s because it is my DD and I have a bad shoulder so I need something a little easier to turn. What is the least expensive and easiest setup to bolt on. I was thinking of getting a later model saginaw unit with new hoses but which box and pitman arm should I use (stocker?). Anything else I will need to change (i.e. steering shaft). Thanks! Mike

You will have to modify the frame to use a factory set up. There is no indention for the steering box.

Good luck with your conversion. I have a 1967 C10 with manual steering too. I would like to go to power steering but from that first reply it sounds like it may be a little to involved for me. I do have a question for you about those new 255/70/15 tires. Are those tires the same size as the original tires that came on our trucks? Let me know how you make out on that steering project. Guy |

Any 67 up to 87 steering box will fit. Use 67-72 pitman arm. To put one on a 60-66 you need an adapter kit. The 80 up used O-ring type hose connection while the older ones used flare fittings.

Its not too hard at all. I did it this summer on my 67. VetteVet is right, there is lots of info on how to do it. Make sure to get the right pulley and bracket setup for your motor, lots of info about that too.

There are tons of pages and posts on the net, but these three are all helpful: 1. The Chevy Truck Page (Realistic DIY approach) 2. Power Steering Upgrade for a Task Force Truck (or what they didn't tell you when you bought the kit) 3. (I think it was) Classic perform.com had a great article, but it doesn't want to load right now. |
