3spd trans questions...?
hey guys couple quick questions....my truck is a 67 lwb with a 250/3peed.and the tranny is going out....2nd gear mostly. and i came into two 3speed trannys.....one tranny is of a vehicle unknown...and one is i was told is out of a 67/68 chervrolet truck, both of these trannys look exactly the same.....in every way....both measure 21 inches...however both are nothing like what i have....? my tranny is small 17 inches and very compact...i have been told by a few people that the trannys i baught are for my truck and what came in my truck..lol but they are not for MY truck...is my small tranny rare, left over from 66s or ???? my trans bolts up to the bellhousing a little differnent( as there are two bolts on the inside and two bolts on the outside...meaning i would have to remover the inpection cover to access two bolts......? im thinking i could make one of the trannys i baught work...with just a simple drive shaft mod...also i do not have a rear tranny crossmember in my 67? but both the trannys i baught have the mounting points on them and mine does not.....any help or a sence of direction would help....tony

Re: 3spd trans questions...?
i dont believe any manual trannies in 67-72pickups had rear crossmembers soounds like you have an original stock setup in the truck now

Re: 3spd trans questions...?
Either 67 or 68 they changed to the full syncro 3 speed. The later one will fit but the linkage may need some modification. If it doesn,t have the threads in the lower holes you can put bolts & nuts in it. You will have to have the drive shaft shortened. My 58 had the later model in it with column linkage when I got it but I took it out & put in a 5 speed. It does not need a crossmember under it.

Re: 3spd trans questions...?
From what I've read here the early non syncro tranny used a bell housing with a smaller diameter pilot hole than the later ones. Might want to check that out. I dont know the measurements, but someone here should. Might be as simple as changing the bearing retainer??

Re: 3spd trans questions...?
The driveshaft yoke is probably different. They went to a fine spline around the same time. John has a point. He is referring to the size of the hole in the bell housing where the front brg. retainer goes in. You should be able to adapt the floor shifter to it.

Re: 3spd trans questions...?
The bearing retainer is the piece on the front that the throwout brg slides on. I did some research, read post#4 in this thread. Hope this helps.
