Radios that fit
I just started driving my 69 SWB again after giving her a 10 year rest. This truck has never had a radio. I want to install one with speakers but I don't want to cut up the dash or the doors. What do you guys use? I know Auto Custome Sound has one that fits. Anyone have one, if so do you like it? I would like AM/FM with a CD, nothing fancy. What choices do I have?

I went to a local stereo store. They had one that fit the dash perfectly except it was slightly shorter from top to bottom.I made a quicky plate to fit behind the faceplate and it looks great. For speakers I used box style speakers, but I have a panel so room was no object. Some speaker options are available though.Kickpanel covers with built in speaker mounts.Overhead consoles.Dash speakers for the stock location that are 2 in 1 for stereo.Moving fuel tank out of cab for speakers to fit behind seats.I think someone has speakers to mount on the rear pillars of the cab.

Most aftermarket radios have adjustable shaft width to fit a variety of dash openings and they use oversize faceplates. If the face plate provided is undersized, you can cut a piece of sheet metal to fit behind the face plate then paint it the color of your choice. Then only way to get a good sound is with good imaging. For that you need the speakers as far apart as possible and as high as possible. My solution was to put them in the door panels. In my '72 Jimmy I made my own panels from 1/4" plywood covered with black vinyl. In my truck I cut the stock door panels. To return to stock is just a matter of replacing door panels and it looks nice and sounds great. I also have an amp and sub under the front seat and I cut the dash for a pullout stereo with CD changer.

I purchased a kenwood 801 remake from Indemand auto parts(http://www.indemandautoparts.com/radios.htm) a dealer in AZ and gets tru Custom Auto Sound. The only thing i don't like bout this radio is that the knobs stick out to far from the dash. Still debating on weather or not to cut it. The picture on there website don't do it justice. If i knew how to post pics i would. I should have my website up shortly with all the restro pics and current pics.

I have a 2 knob pioneer in mine,im sure most any 2 knobber will fit they are adjustable, then you can add a cd changer,i have some pioneer truck speakers now, they sound fine,i just dont stuff them all the way under the seat.no complaints, but htey arent something for alot of bass,my future upgrade is calling for hole in the dash for a tuner,a CD changer, some 10's behind the seat, and ill cut door panels for mids and tweets.door panels are easier to replace than a door.

I bought a new old stock pioneer Am/FM 8-track deck for $40 that fit in the dash nicely without any cutting. Hooked it up to a LMC dual voice coil single speaker in the original location in the dash. Sounds OK and is a real conversation piece. Great vintage look (shiny aluminum front and knobs). People give me all their old 8-tracks for free.

Here's a web site for an outfit that does the conversion of original radios to FM or FM stereo.

I have custom autosound units in my C30 and my suburban, both fit with no mods, and the knobs sit in the same position as the original radio. They are am/fm cassette, with hookups for 6 CD player, which I suppose sits under the seat. They run about 2-250 bucks, and work great. Most big parts stores for our trucks have them.
In order to fit a in dash CD player, you would have to cut the dash I think, as the factory opening is too small. I also used original knobs off my old am unit, with minor mods, the radio looks 1970. ------------------ jku 70 C30 CST Longhorn 68k10 burb 69 K5 beater 43 willys GPW 40 Chev coupe 67 catalina
