removing smog stuff 87 305 tbi

I would like to remove the smog stuff off of my truck it is a 87 half ton 305 with the fuel injection. I am going to convert to a carb as the tbi has plugged up injectors, which are 180$ each up here that is the money for a nice intake right there and all these parts will bolt right up to the 350 I am building. If you can offer any advice I have done a bunch of searching but can't get any result's Thanks

Re: removing smog stuff 87 305 tbi

If all that is wrong is plugged injectors, replace the fuel filter and ebay some injectors. Lot cheaper than a carb swap! Don't forget that to do the carb swap you will need to bypass the computer, or swap in the setup from an 84-86 with a carb which unless you have it is more hassle. You'll need a non-CCC (coumputer command controlled) distributor (one that has its own internal advance curve, yours is CCC), intake, carb, correct throttle cable unless your works with your carb, and if you have auto trans, a lockup wiring kit. Plus a fuel regulator (TBI pump is 6-9psi, cab wants 3.5 or so). All to lose driveability, poorer fuel mileage, and gain a little power on the top end if you change the cam.
Better off fixing TBI and putting the money into new parts on that 350. Then you can swap out whatever is needful all at once.

D13 is correct!

You really don't want to do this the TBI system is far better than any carb set up!!!

I know all the guy's running carb's will disagree but that's cuz they have a carb! And not FI and probably don't want to spend the money to convert to FI or don't understand how FI works and thats okay.

But you have Fuel Injection so KEEP IT!!!

It's highly unlikely that your injectors are pluged up.

First go buy a TBI rebuild kit and a new Fuel Filter AC DELCO P/N GF481 all the auto part stores carry them this will be even cheaper than just the carburator alone!!!!.

And then remove the entire TBI unit from the intake manifold and completely disassemble and clean it inside and out this is really simple it's easyer than rebuilding a carb and remove the two injector unit's.

On each injector where the fuel enters there is a small band screen and that may be blocking the fuel flow the kit should have new one's in it replace them and the o-rings and put it all back togeather replace every thing that comes in that kit don't reuse anything i think that kit even has a new fuel pressure regulator diaphragram and spring this could be a problem too if your fuel pressure isn't constant then it will run poorly.

Reinstall the TBI back on the truck and run it and see if it's fixed.

Thumbs up Re: removing smog stuff 87 305 tbi

Here's a rebuild kit
http://www.autozone.com/R,APP548751/...ductDetail.htm

There are cheaper kit's but id'e stick to a good name brand like GP-Sorenson or Niehoff.

Re: removing smog stuff 87 305 tbi

Also,... that's what makes the '87 model worth a little more that the previous years. (carburetor equipped trucks.) I had a '86 swb 305 and a '87 (tbi) swb 305. No comparison in reliable driveability. Keep the tbi!

Stick with the throttle body. Very simple to rebuild. Easy starts when its cold. A 87' is worth more if you leave it tbi. A few bucks now will save alot later. Also there is not that much smog stuff on a 87'. Take the belt of your smog pump and that should free up some power.

Down here you can get rebuilt injectors for around $85 thru parts stores, from Borg- Warner. I strongly agree with leaving the TBI on. If it really needs the injectors, by the rebuilts plus a body kit, and in an hour you will be done with it.

Re: removing smog stuff 87 305 tbi

I had my injectors cleaned, completely rebuilt and flow tested by WitchHunter Performance. http://www.witchhunter.com/

Basic service is about $17 per injector plus shipping. Much cheaper than stuff from auto parts store. Removing smog from your truck is not a really good idea because sooner or later Kalifornia Eco-Nazi's (led by Al Gore) will be crawling up your exhaust pipe.

Re: removing smog stuff 87 305 tbi

I totally disagree with them, I say pull off all the tbi, intake, gas tank, etc and trade it to me for my Q-jet parts. Deal??? Seriously consider keeping the tbi, I have been looking for an 87 swb with tbi for months and cannot find one in my price range. Plenty of 86 and earlier ones though.

Re: removing smog stuff 87 305 tbi

keep the tbi. im going through the process of re instaling the tbi in my 87 after the previous owner did a complete hack job of taking the 305 out and putting in a carbbed 350. the only good thing about it is the police intercepter tbi 350 thats going in. youll kick yourself for switching to a carb setup. i know i wish i had the tbi in my truck now whenever i go to drive it and the carb dosnt feel like working right. take the intake and throttle body off and give it a god cleaning, replace the o rings and filters and you should be good to go

Re: removing smog stuff 87 305 tbi

kevin1970- The distance doesn't matter to me, since I have paid vacation I need to use up. What do you have? Really looking for one in exceptional condition, all power with blue or dark gray interior, white or silver exterior. Needs to be mechanically sound enough to make it back to OK. Let me know, I am very serious as I am selling my 2006 and need a DD... Kaysen
