WIW: 72 K20 old rural fire rig

Ok I could not get good pictures today in this weather so you are going to have to listen to what I saw. It is a faded factory red 72 4x4 3/4 with a faded red fiberglass utility bed most likely installed when the truck was new. Truck is an original engine 350, automatic ps and pb. Glovebox shows no spin rear axle appeared to be an Eaton, white below eyeline mirrors and 16.5 tire combo. All HD type options but no tow hooks. Owner claimed it was 56k original miles which can not be verified by title and what threw me was the glovebox showed factory tach and the whole gage cluster (now non tach) looked like it came out of well used sun faded truck. So I have to question actual miles. The truck was a Chevrolet dealer trade in in the 80's and some farmer made a irrigation truck out of it for a period of time. Still has fire dept painting on the original paint no rust doors and the body is faded but very small spot of rust appearing in the cab corners and under front floor braces only. One inner fender has rust through. Tires shot, w/s cloudy, grille cracked. Was a plain Custom 20 model with white bumper, no caps, clear glass. One fender had some paint work years ago where it is blistering. Twin spotlights and of course holes for antennas and lights at one time. Interior is ok had hd vinyl sewed cover later model steering wheel aftermarket radio but no holes cutout.
After I hear some responses I'll clue you in on what I thought and what his firm take it or leave it price is. Oh and he also said with a new battery it will run and drive ok but it does smoke a little like valve guides when you first start it.

Mark, your killing me, I'd rather have a automatic than that 4 speed I'm looking at up north of you.

Re: WIW: 72 K20 old rural fire rig

Randy
I kind of was all excited when I got a tip on this factory red 72 so I braved out on the icey roads to go track it down this afternoon. But with what the guy up north is probably thinking his truck is worth and what this guy near me thinks this red truck is worth you could probably change the transmission and repaint it whatever color you would like and still be money ahead. One of Joe's body swapped 4x4's is probably what you would have in fixing one of these up to that caliber if you have to figure in the parts and body work and paint.

Mark

Re: WIW: 72 K20 old rural fire rig

sounds real close to a truck i bought on a "sealed bid" auction a few years back for $649.95. mine had a few dents and dings but no rust, just a tired old original 72 3/4 ton 4x4. my guess on a price would be somewhere in the 1500-1800 range.

Re: WIW: 72 K20 old rural fire rig

I`m surprised they used a fiberglass utility body. They`re not recommended for off road applications.I guess it survived, though. That must have been about as early as they started using them and before warranty problems caused them to started selling them limited to hiway use.
Sounds pretty neat, yet limited in the scope of interest.Real truck guys love this stuff, right?
I`m not guessing what you might be getting it for.I`d say it`s worth $2,500-3,000 at least to the general buying public.More in some areas and less in others.

Re: WIW: 72 K20 old rural fire rig

i saw an old rural 76 chevy fire truck with less than 8,000 miles here in my county that was beat beyond belief sell at an auction for over 5K, so if that guy has seen any of these trucks sell high, he probably wants 5-7k for it.

Re: WIW: 72 K20 old rural fire rig

Well, I'm not going to waste another 60 mile trip to talk that guy into me taking some pictures. I learned from this guys son that he had this truck and he was asking $5500. So I got a hold of him within an hour and drove out in the ice storm to his farm to look. My biggest disappointment was if the dash would have been the original tach dash cluster as per the spid label, I might have went for it because of the more believeable documented miles. But with the cluster changed out who actually knew if it was actually 10k or 100k miles. Caught up in the excitement, I still offered him $4500 cash which was way more than I thought it was worth based mainly on the factory red paint and the options. He basically told me hell no it will be sitting right there in that spot until I'm dead unless I see $5500. I'm guessing these days if it were all polished up with that original painted "Bellevue Fire Department" logo on the doors, that truck could see that $5500 on eBay from an internet picture just as greisel72 said above.

I have alot nicer original 3/4t 4wds that I consider to be in the $6,500-$7,500 range.I guess, according to him,I should raise mine up alot.
