The King of weird noises does it again....

My truck holds the record in our club as being the one that has the strangest noises. Today a new one cropped up and I wanted to see if any of you guys had ever heard this one.

I accelerated up to 65 on the way to the bank in Forney today when I got on the highway. After reaching 65 I let off a bit to hit cruising speed and this weird valvetrain sounding noise started clattering. It sounds almost like revving a motor up with very little oil in it. At first it was only doing this at speed and not making a sound if I either let off the gas or accelerated more. Now I am beginning to hear it a bit at part throttle acceleration. Oil has been checked [I added Lucas to it last week cause my upper rings are loose and I thought it would minimize the blow-by]. The oil level is fine and it's been say 6000 miles since the last change.

I looked for something that might be vibrating but found nothing loose under the hood. As the noise progresses, I am pretty sure it's in the valvetrain, but it doesn't do it at idle or when the pedal is to the metal.

Anyone heard of this? The motor has bever been rebuilt and has at least 149k on it. I talked to a couple of friends that say I have the strangest noises and that most of them they've never heard before....lucky me huh?

Same thing happened to me. It was the pinion bearing in the rear end. For me it sounded like the noise was at the back of the cab about where the tranny is. Jack it up and listen to the rear end while someone revs it up. Remember safety first.

Re: The King of weird noises does it again....

Is it possible it could be a timing problem?

It kind of sounds like it could be the clatter when there is a problem with the mechanical or vacuum advance.

Re: The King of weird noises does it again....

well i think that it's about time that you change that oil there. i change mine every 3k(give or take a few hundred miles). you may just have to go in and just adjust your rocker arms. its a simple enough thing to do. a stethoscope is a mechanic's best friend. if you don't got one, a screwdriver works almost as good.

Re: The King of weird noises does it again....

I just installed a new distributor the day before. It's an Accel Billet. I can check the vacuum advance tomorrow and see if it is working.

I know a ton of folks who change their oil at 3k, I usually change mine every 5k, I know I am a little late on that, but I can't imagine that causing the problem when the factory recommended 6500-7500 miles between changes.

Lifter failure....that may be the case, I just don't know.

The sound is definitely coming from the front of the truck so I doubt it's the rear axle.

Re: The King of weird noises does it again....

Kelly with that many miles on it the timing chain can be real loose allowing the chain to flop around and maybe slap the timing cover, the valve lash might need to be adjusted or just an oil change as it starts getting pretty thin with that many miles on the oil. I think I'd start with an oil and filter change to a heavier weight oil like say a 20w50 and see how it sounds. Have you tested the oil pressure to see just what it has?
Just reread your post. Did it make this noise BEFORE you changed the dist?

Re: The King of weird noises does it again....

No it didn't, it's a brand new noise. I am going to change the oil in the morning and see if that helps.

I checked the timing chain 5 months ago when I replaced the timing cover and it was only moving about 1/8".

Re: The King of weird noises does it again....

Well the verdict is in...lifter failure on number 5 cylinder. I thought it was an exhaust leak and the ticking was just getting louder, but the headers are not the cause. The motor has never been rebuilt from what we could tell last year when we pulled the pan and the intake so I guess it's time to replace it.

Since this is my daily driver I'll be getting a stock motor with an RV cam for towing from a local rebuilder so that I can get back on the road soon.

The 350 in the truck now will get stripped down and inspected for possible use later in the stepper as a 400-425 hp 383....
