Question about tranny's
Ok, newb question. Looking to put an automatic tranny in my 64 GMC which has a 3spd manual on the floor. What stock trannys are out there that could handle atleast 400hp, and will it bolt to my current 327? Will upgrade motor in the future that will potential, "cross fingers" make around 400hp. Just looking for simple answers as I know there are many variables out there. Thanks in advance.
Mike

I would think a 700R4. It's used in a lot of street rods. |

Re: Question about tranny's
I like the 700R4. It has a pretty aggressive 1st gear, so if you are hauling a load or pulling a trailer, it can easily get you rolling, and the overdrive is easy on the gas $$$. Just my two.

Re: Question about tranny's
What type of vehicles have those installed stock, maybe I can pick one up at the junkyard. What would be the going price for something like that? Thanks for the info guys.

Re: Question about tranny's
Mine has a 200-4R. The gear ratios are closer so you don't have as big a drop between 1st and 2nd. Also the overdrive is a slightly better ratio. I run mine without a lock-up TC so setting it up is simple. As for 400hp, it can be built to hold it with a few aftermarket parts. If you aren't running slicks you will probably not hook up good enough to break it. I've towed a yard of concrete with my truck and that is pretty hard on the trans as well.
