What did you do on your truck today?
This might be a fun daily thing. What did you do to your truck today? I'll admit I'm a bit obsessive and get in 2-8 hours every day. Since the trip to Monroe fell through I figured I'd get some stuff done.
I rebuilt my AC control lever box. Had a broken lever. I also tore apart my AC box. Its a mess. Did an inventory of what needs fixing and what needs replacing. Replaced my heater motor resistor with one from the junkyard. Hi speed still didnt work so I removed the heater resistor entirely and jumpered the connection. If I cant have it all at least I'll have Hi speed for now until I can figure out whats the deal with that thing. went to the junkyard for my semi weekly search. picked up a turn signal body. Good thing they rarely charge me for stuff. It didnt make my running light work. spent am hour tracking the problem down after I installed the turn signal base and found a loose wire coming out of the block that plugs into the cowl. stripped the end, slathered it with crazy glue and shoved it in the hole. works like a champ . Plus I figured out the turn signal/side marker out of sequence thing. Looks cool that way. They had a couple of new arrivals at the junkyard . One was a 3/4 ton 68 stepside longbed that was lowered and pimped out with the semi style exhaust stacks. Yuck! Had a good turn signal base though. And I pulled an axle to repair a leaking end seal gasket . Probably caused from when I removed the carrier to replace it with a locker unit and reused the flange gaskets. Made it right.

I drove it about 200 miles between yesterday and today. I sweat and my arms hurt. I need A/C & Power steering. More wish list things. Oh yeah broke the speedo or cable.
Nothing productive though...Oh I filled it with gas...does that Count??

I talked nicely about my truck today and thought about how I wish I could have been working on it...does that count?

I took a bunch of old junk out of the gararge and hauled it to the dump in the pickup. I test-fitted the truck in the gararge to see if I can work on it over the winter. I'm going to pull the motor in a month. (I hope!)

bought some sanding discs for the grinder, a new cut-off wheel i didn't need (yet?) and some sanding pads for the palm sander that didn't come close to fitting... and some grey primer.
now i just need to get it in the garage tomorrow so i can cut out the rust, grind off the other rust/fiberglass/bondo and remove the old paint... list of things i still need: - sheetmetal - more primer (not yet) - a wire brush for a 4" grinder that NOBODY sells... lol! - some cans of rubberized undercoating

this should be a fun post
yesterday i rewired my door jams, i think this time for good. fit 6 wires into a loom that i think was made for 3 and electri-taped it nice and tight. i dont think ill have anymore frustrating ground outs.
today i had to re-bolt my pipes to my headers at the collectors that i just paid $225 last week on for a custom job. guy didnt even use lock washers! he'll hear it on monday. tomorrow ill be adjusting my pass. door so it doesnt drag and pops the door out nice when activate my shave handle solenoid (either that or just watch the niner game)

Swapped wheels off the '72, stripped and polished them (centerline's) put new rubber all the way around.
Pull the engine out of the '72. Installed the Alpine radio, that doesnt belong in a old truck, in the '71 (even though I cant hear a dam thing from the exhaust) Drove to Vassar,KS to pick up the 383 shortblock and Met Mark25. All truck day today |

I drove it to work.
I added 2 qts of eng oil. I added a quart of tranny fluid. I added a 1/4 bottle of brake juice. I inflated the rear tires up some. I shoveled out all the crap from in the cab. Wiped off the egg that the neighborhood punks were so nice to give me. Funny, it wasn't hot enough to fry an egg on the hood, so why was it there? That's about it. |

Wet blocked the hood and front fenders with 220 and a 9" sanding block. Tough work, but got it straight

Replaced belts Ck'd all fluid levels Replaced air cleaner filter Ck'd timing Lubed front end and u-joints Adjusted carb Repaired leak at t-stat housing Sprayed power clean on engine and compartment and power washed (still cleaning up old oil, grease and grime) Wish I had more time to spend on it. Wasted (in my opinion) the entire freakin' day trying to get the trailing arms out. Those 1 1/16" nuts for the rear U-bolts took me forever, and I still have the 1 1/8" bolts on the trailing arms to look forward to. So far I've had to heat each and every nut with a torch to get them to turn. Both lower spring bolts broke inside the trailing arms, and I can't get the upper bolts to even turn. I don't know what the hell I'm going to do with those, since I can't reach them with a grinder...
I'm just on brake. I'm going back down in a few to try a little more. The U-bolts are stuck inside the trailing arms. I think I'm just going to cut them. Screw-em. I'm too tired to mess with them any more...

Drove (71 4x4 suburban) to a wrecking yard, met more good truck people...always do when I drive the beast around. Took some decent parts off a wrecked truck...hence a decent dana 60 3/4 ton power- lok carrier and a complete factory tinted glass package...less windshield. Not a bad way to spend day.
