Auto Steering column removal?
I started removing my atuomatic steering column without asking any questions, so here's where I am. I have removed the rag joint from the steering sector, I have removed all the brackets under the dash, I have removed the bracket from the firewall. Now how do I get it to go thru the fire wall. The automaic levers, do they have to be removed, because they are going to be difficult to get thru the slot. I did not remvoe the steering wheel either, do I need to? Help please. Thanks

Re: Auto Steering column removal?
I don't think that you can remove the automatic levers without taking the column apart. You should be able to tilt it towards the passenger side to remove it, or rotate the column to where the levers are on top. It should then slide right out. There's no need to remove the steering wheel.

Re: Auto Steering column removal?
I took mine out without removing anthing. Cant remember how I did it though, just turned it until it came out I think. You will have to unhook the linkage from the end of the column though...

Re: Auto Steering column removal?
The hole in the fire wall has a teardrop shape to it. Turn the levers down toward the smaller end of the opening and pull the column though. The rubber grommet at the firewall should come out with the column. May be alittle wiggling involved.

Re: Auto Steering column removal?
Once you have taken apart the rag joint, the under dash brackets and the firewall seal you should be able to remove it from the cab side with little or no problems. I don't think it will go the other way throught the firewall, but I usually take the path of least resistance. I could be wrong it has happen before
