utility truck bodies

I have been thinking of getting a 73-87 truck with the utility body on it .. like the one linked int his ebay auction but in our body style not the real high one like the fire department uses for a rescue truck but one where the cabinets are about 2/3 as high as the roof of the cab 3/4 ton suspension or one ton single wheel suspension.. just something that i can organize screws and hardware in. I was thinking of putting a rack on it so i can carry ladders and the bed would accomodate sheetrock on end .. do any of you contractors use these trucks and do you find them worth the trouble? what kind of mileage do you get with the body on there
Can you get bins made for them to take boxes of screws and all? and parking in the city are these things easilly opened by thieves when they break in?

Been using Utility bodies for years, its my workshop on wheels! To look at different configurations, go on Reading, Stahl, Knapheide's websites. There are too many variants to list here, and you can arrange the shelving in the cabinets for almost any application. One of the reasons I switched to a dual wheel truck was for the deeper cabinets on the side. My latest one I added a headache rack/ladder rack. Also comes in real handy for towing all the new trucks home.
Also, Bob that truck you're looking at is the old HD, should have a GVW of 15,000, you really need one that big? I take it you just posted the link to show the body, LOL. And for gas mpgs, forget it! Its a cost of doing business! My K3500 gets about 8-9 mpg local, 11 on the highway. I just figure it in to the job.
One last thing, you don't want to put a service body on a half ton truck, at least a 3/4 because the body and all the junk you're going to put in the compartments will kill any hauling capacity.
Used utility bodies don't usually fetch a whole lot because the market is a little limited.

that blue one is exactly what im after i see the old con edison ( electrical utility ones) here going for less than 2K they are automatic trans and power steering i figure it will work out better than the regular pickup for tools and keep a regular pickup for garbage removal thanks for the info!
