What rearend should I be looking for?

I have a '68 1 ton with an Eaton 4:10 dually leaf spring rearend, 4 speed, 292 motor. I have recently come across a '67 Caddy 472 motor and TH400. I want to put a rear with better gears, ie 3:73 or lower and posi. that would work better with the Caddy motor and trans. What dually rearend do you guys think I should look for?

Thanks
Chuck

Re: What rearend should I be looking for?

Well, what all years? That would be the only choice if I did not modify. I believe I could use a newer rearend and move the spring perches inward. Dana 60, Dana 70? Chevy, Dodge, #ord. Looking for something fairly easy to find and adapt. I believe I will have to fab the drive shaft so I could adapt it to any yoke I suppose.

I understood the Eaton and 14-bolt used the same ring and pinion gears??????? Not positive on this...

If so, then just buy and change to what you want...

Re: What rearend should I be looking for?

Do I have to get an axle from a dually or can a single wheel axle take dual wheels. I thought the duallies were a little shorter. No real old trucks with dual wheels left around here, what else can I look in, delivery vans? I don't think overall width will be a big problem because I am using a flatbed. I probably will post a WTB on the board.

Re: What rearend should I be looking for?

a 14 bolt can go down to 3.21 gears. a dana can only go to 3.54 unless you find a dana 61 and it will go to 3.07.
