5 Bolt patern versus 6 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I recently picked up a 72 c-10 as a parts truck for my 70. My 70 has a 6 lug bolt pattern and the 72 has a 5 lug pattern. Which is the stronger of the paterns and if benificial, how hard would it be to swap out? If you haven't guessed by now, my first priority is not original restoration. I just want a quality truck that I can make my own repairs on. Thanks for any help.

The 5 lug pattern will be easier to get wheels for, & really shouldnt be a problem for strenght. On the rear diff, you should be able to swap the axle shafts between the 70 & 72. Up front, the 72 will have the disc brakes, a good upgrade for the older trucks. i have 5 lug (mid 70s 1/2 ton parts) under the old longhorn. good luck....AL

And if everything is as it should be, you'll need alot of weight , or way too much power to start breaking good lugs, be it a 5 or a 6 lug set up.
