dsigh's '87 Project
Well, after being a little overwhelmed with a couple of '68 projects, I've decided to get back into the game with a '87 SWB. The pics are how the truck sits now, but I will be going through it in the next few months. Pics will be updated as progress is made.

Re: dsigh's '87/ '73 Project
I found a used '77 bed, replaced the cracked passenger side exhaust manifold, replaced the factory cat with a high-flo and did the exhaust with a single in and out Magnaflow.
Next is replacing the column and getting the 700R4 worked... |

Re: dsigh's '87/ '73 Project
Transmission has been tuned up and I just got some tires for my powdercoated wheels. Feels good to actually drive this thing now. Also fixed the tilt and found a tailgate. Updates to follow...

In the weeds without bags, lowered leafs springs and a hanger for 7" in the rear, 5.5" in the front from springs and spindles. Shave the stake pockets and filler in the bed and shoot it with a Hot Rod Flatz, not sure what shade. And drive it while I save for the motor.

"Hot Rod Flatz" ...check with your local paint guy. He can make the same thing for you, but cheaper! Also in a lot more color choices as well. You can even choose how flat, or how much gloss you want it, it's all a percentage. Picking and designing your own paint is pretty worth while, it just adds that much more to being "yours"! I have been really wanting to do a static on my Suburban, like 2-3" off, but last time I did that the local department didn't think it was a good idea. (I could knock the reflectors off the road and the tickets followed). Any part of your truck that is lower than the lowest part of the rim is considered illegal in Oregon. So unless I run a low profile tire I'm outta luck. I have two, so maybe I'll do one of each. If you are only doing a static, just raise your hangers. There are always a way to do it "yourself" which I enjoy knowing I did myself. (Laughing) Just keep it safe! I wanna see what you end up with, I'm a huge fan of low static drops! There is a white long bed that a guy shows that's super low, and it looks really good! Good luck, I'll be waiting!! |

I've talked to a few painters here in Sac, and everyone is telling me the flat comes from not clearing. If that's not the case, whats the secret? I was interested in the Hot Rod line because it has a sealer or clear in it as well. |

From the title of the thread, I was going to put a '73 front clip on it, but I'm having second thoughts now. I'll probably just got with a billet grille. Last edited by sighlurr; 01-27-2008 at 01:28 AM. |

It's just a flattener that they put in it (paint), and you actually get a clear with flattener in it as well to protect it. I'm not a painter, but read about it in a forum I looked up a while back. I'm looking into it for my Suburban, maybe a two tone. Last edited by Mkcustums; 03-13-2008 at 11:58 AM. |

Re: dsigh's '87/ '73 Project
Good progress. Curious, the pre-81 bed bolts right up to that chassis? I have an 87 that I'm debating on whether to patch the bed I have or look for one in better condition. There are many good 73-80 beds in my area but wasn't sure if they are different compared to the 81+

Re: dsigh's '87/ '73 Project
you can achieve the equivalent of hot rod flatz black by using a single stage black paint and adding the flattening agent. I however decided to just use the hot rod flatz. I dont think it is cheaper to go the other route though. The kit comes with reducer, hardener and flattening agent already mixed in paint. No need to find the right mixture of paint & flattening agent to get the correct sheen desired. Anyway... the choice is yours. Good luck.
