Re: tranny help
if the drive shafts are spinning that would lead me to believe its in the rears but two at nce?? that sounds odd they would both go at same time

Re: tranny help
Yeah if the driveshafts are turning then the rear gears are gone. Lock in the fronts and see if it moves.. If you were closer I would swap the gears for you..

Re: tranny help
Thump is right. Lock in the front hubs, put her in FWD and see if it moves. If it does front diff is OK. If it soesen't and shafts (2) are spinning you did the impossible and blew both rear ends (LOL). I would bet against that. The "pop" you said you heard would have been a GREAT big bang!! Take the cover off the pumpkin and look at the gears, you'll know right away if the ring and pinion are damaged. Check the spider and side gears. If you stripped the teeth off any of them you'll get the same symptom. Also look at the axel splines. I've never seen those strip out but I guess it is possible. If you had busted an axel you would have seen the wheel\tire assembly come right out. I live in Saratoga NY, is that close to you? Bring her on down and I'll fix ya right up. 30 some odd years tangeling with these things. I actually like doing differentials, must be nuts. LOL Hope I gave you some help, jim

Re: tranny help
Mud: If your truck is equiped with the auto hubs, chuck them in the trash yesterday. I've replaced or overhauled hundreds of them when they were under warrantee. Replace them with a set of manual hubs from Warn. Now. I want you to jack the truck up and put it on stands. We are going to check the front drive axels. Start engine, put truck in 4wd, engage the trans in low and leave it there. Get out and look at each side of the front drive axel between the ball joints. You should see the front drive axel "U" joint and it should be turning even if the wheel isn't. If the axel is turning and the tire isn't the hub is toast and replacing the hubs to manual will correct this. If you want you can call me on the phone and I'll explain it in detail. Send me a private e-mail or message and I'll give you the number. Hope this helps, jim

Re: tranny help
Update: thanks for replies , Removed diff covers . Chunks of spider gear in the rear. Front seemed ok no fragments, just clean oil. so hubs are probably toast?.

Re: tranny help
Mud: OK, now your getting someplace. GM sells a spider gear kit. It has everything you'll need to fix the rear diff except gasket and lube. It will help if you have the axel code off the top of the right side axel tube 4 or 5 inches from the pumpkin. Most good parts stores will have the replacement hub locks for the front. Warn is probably the best for the money. Make sure they are manual hubs. Jim
