Lean/rich indicators ?

Are any of you guys running a lean/rich indicator sensor ?

MSD sells a kit, anybody used that one?

Anybody got a set-up they suggest

Short of having a meter (which I do) to measure the air/fuel ratio at the tailpipe, I have had more luck with my nose. If the mixture is rich, it'll bring tears to your eyes and burn your nose. On the lean side, it may be hard to crank when it's hot, because a lean engine runs hotter and the heat soak will affect the starter.

I have the NGK AFX meter, it works great. I have used others but the wideband sensor is much better.

Spark plugs may tell you everything, but a wideband with datalogging can tell you everything in one pull without opening the hood.

I bought a a/f meter at AutoZone and installed unheated O2 sensors in the header collectors. Total cost was less than $100 including welding two bungs into the collectors. While narrow band sensors are tuned specifically for 14.7 a/f ratio and aren't as informative as the wide band plus a data-logger, you can still do a lot with them if you'll "mentally average" what the gauge is telling you. I've adjusted my Holley 750DP's jetting so that it's averaging 14.7 a/f on the highway, then turning mostly green (richer than 14.7) when I'm really getting on it.

If you have the cash, the better solution though is the wide-band + data logger for sure.

In my Sierra I have a vacuum gauge mounted on the dash.It helps me gauge my fuel economy by letting me "gauge" my fuel to air mix.It`s amazing how a slight lift of the right foot can maintain the same speed,yet increase the economy.The gauge is color-coded to indicate Power,Driving,Idle,and Economy.In that order.I can roll along and consume less than idle.They used to put vacuum gauges in cars back in the early 60s.I don`t know why the government hasn`t mandated them if they are truly concerned with conserving fuel.
