Painting a Frame?

I have the frame sandblasted clean and washed off, now ready for paint. I was originally going to use POR-15. I've used it before, but it was a hassle brushing it on and getting in all the nooks and crannies of a frame. Seeing as how my truck will solely be used for the dragstrip and weekend city cruiser, never seeing any snow, salt, or rain, do I really need to go with something as strong as POR-15 or can I get away with using Krylon primer and then paint? I would just think it would be easier to paint again if I ever (and will) make mods to the frame, just scratch up, prime and paint. POR-15 requires tie coat primer to bond new to old, and it's all relatively expensive. Thoughts? Well appreciated, as I am trying to paint this thing over the weekend.

PS I know you die hard daily driver guys cringe when I say the truck will never see snow, salt, or rain, and I applaud driving a vehicle instead of garaging it or trailering it (not trailering mine, EVER, I want to drive to the track, whoop butt and drive home while everybody else is loading up their fancy trailers). However, I just don't have the budget to drive that truck to work every day!

Re: Painting a Frame?

I used this... kinda like POR-15 but looks and feels like powdercoat. I brushed it on but it goes quick. Buy the chassis kit and you are good to go. Sealer one day and paint the next. That's my frame on their website... If you are doing the axles and springs I would get two kits. I used 1.5 qts of each on my frame, crossmembers, leaf springs and axles. That was two coats of each too...

I used the non-UV stuff but the AG111 is UV resistant, POR-15 isn't...

$62 AG111 Chassis Kit (Includes 1 qt. SATIN or GLOSS AG111, 1 qt. MasterSeries Permanent Rust Sealer, 1 qt. MCT 101 thinner)

Re: Painting a Frame?

Get it powder coated... The powder will get in every little tight spot and it will provide a nice and durable finish for years!

Plus a large variety of colors and even gloss or satin finishes.

Re: Painting a Frame?

I don't know where joliet IL is but I got my frame powdercoated for a great price in Southern Indiana. It was around $250 to sandblast and powdercoat and they did an awesome job. You may still rather paint but I just thought you might want to know that powdercoating might not cost as much as you think. If you have any questions about the powdercoating feel free to PM me.
