any 250 six cylinder experts here?
The 250 six in my son's '81 SWB Custom Deluxe has a weird pully thing going on. The bottom pulley on the engine (running off the crank) is a three grooved pulley.
The back two grooves are wobbly and loose while the front groove is still set solidly in place.......? What the heck is the deal and how can I fix it? (I'm fairly mechanically inclined but have no experience with Chevy sixes).

Re: any 250 six cylinder experts here?
I'm not sure exactly, but when I see six cyl. I perk up cause my 73 has one, I'd have to look to see how many grooves mine has. I thought these pulleys would be all one piece, but if not maybe the first two didn't get seated all the way back. If it is all one piece then the machining would have to be faulty. good luck bob

If I remember correctly when I pulled mine out of my 79, I think it is a 2 piece pulley. I would check to see if the bolts are loose.

Re: any 250 six cylinder experts here?
Guys, thanks! Long story short, the harmonic balancer had fallen apart and I had to replace it. The parts houses don't stock them so I wound going to a salvage yard and spent three hours yanking one off an '84 - cost me a whopping $10 .
You can get thm at the parts houses but they gotta order 'em.

I agree with the harmonic balancer as the culprit. I had a 1976 Chevy Nova with a 6/250 that ran like stink! Had the same thing happen. Oh, see you got it fixed. LBJ
