Face Plates for chopped up stereo slot
Well, I am one of the unlucky ones that ended up with a truck that has the stereo area cut all to he!!
What I am wondering is if anyone knows of a place to get some sort of plate to go around the stereo to give it sort of a "framed" look and to hide the chopped out areas? I think Kevin (Rockcrln) has one one his "low Buck" build. Thanks for any input. Jon

Re: Face Plates for chopped up stereo slot
You could make a templet out of cardboard and transfer it to metal or wood your choice to cover up the excessive trimming done but someone.

Re: Face Plates for chopped up stereo slot
Are you putting a cd-player in?Or is it more hacked than just for the stereo? There are surrounds sold for cd-platers in`73-up and universal applications.

Re: Face Plates for chopped up stereo slot
Special-K,
There is already a CD player in it (going to be replaced with a newer one) and whoever in the past had cut lines that extend beyond the stereo about 1/4".

Re: Face Plates for chopped up stereo slot
I had the same problem and decided to fill in the hole and be done with it. This way I can put in what I want in the future whether it be gauges or tunes and this doesn't look like an add on or a cover up. This might not be a good idea if you have a newer interior, but if your thinking of a new interior this might be the answer.

That's what I am talking about! It was your build where I saw that. Looks like aluminum. That is exactly what I am wanting to do.

Re: Face Plates for chopped up stereo slot
well my dad made it...but i gave him the idea
i dont no what he used to cut it but he works at a shop where they have all them machine that you can put the measurments into and it will cut it out. all the measurments were perfect and the radio fit right in there with no slop. Last edited by clemson71guy; 12-27-2007 at 03:12 PM. |

Re: Face Plates for chopped up stereo slot
Very nice. It could also be customized by leaving off the screw holes and tapping a couple of holes on the back for all-thread. Then you could mount it with a nut from the backside and have a clean plate. This would be a cool addition for the guys making the aluminum gauge panels and glovebox covers...

Re: Face Plates for chopped up stereo slot
My uncle used an old road sign for the material to make his. He just has a small amount of epoxy holding it on rather than screws. With thinner material you can probably just use a dremel or air die grinder.

Re: Face Plates for chopped up stereo slot
and don't forget about the option of replacing the entire piece.
I have seen a few threads on doing a complete replacement (but too lazy to look for them at the moment). My solution will be to do the cuts along the top under the dash pad rather than the full to the base of the window replacement. 2 bolts on each side from what I can remember. I don't know about where you are, but around here, I have seen a few good dash boards in the yards, just ripe for the taking

Re: Face Plates for chopped up stereo slot
That is what I did on mine but I used thinner aluminum and didn't use screws. I used the stereo to hold it in.

Re: Face Plates for chopped up stereo slot
No, I am not looking to go back to stock. just wanted something to cover up the hash marks from PO. Now i just ran across a free dash out of a 68 that is uncut and is FREE (I am also purchasing some doors from the guy). Going to go look at it a a couple hours.
