4x4 on i6

Is there anyone running 4x4 on 6 cylinder, 292 engine?
Is it doable? What part I need to change and to add
I need to plan to install 4x4 on my truck

Your gonna need a tranny and transfer case. Front and rear driveshafts, Front spring hangers and shackles, Front leaf springs, front axle, And probably alot more that i forgot. If i were you i would find a donor truck to rob all of the parts from or put your body and engine on a 4 wheel drive chassis.

I had an 81' 4x4 Blazer with that engine and a standard transmission. I would have preferred a 350, but it had penty of power offroad.

Jott, I beg to differ. 33 years with GM I know of what I speak. You could get a truck like Shamil's with an inline 6. definately NOT real common, but you could order it that way. Next. Any trans thats in it now WILL bolt up to a six cyl. Bell housing bolt paterns haven't changed in eyons and flex plates are punched for different converter bolt circles. SO, this being the case, all the 4 wheel drive stuff will be the same EXCEPT the rod from the transfer case to the shifter will need to be longer. Engine mounts will have to be relocated too. Leave the current front suspension alone. True, it will ride a little stiffer but after all it IS a truck. Next, cross member(s) are going to have to be relocated, no big deal. Next, find a COMPETENT machine shop because the drive shafts are going to have to be made. You won't find stock ones anyplace. You will have to fool with small stuff like hoses and wireing but thats no big deal, just time consuming. Personally, I wouldn't mess with it. There isn't much of a difference between a 292 cid and a 305 cid (13 cubic inches) and a 305 will slide right in there like it had eyes. Differences in fuel economy will be so small it won't matter. If you want a smaller motor go with a 262 v8 from an older Chevy Monza. The 262 is the parent of the 305. All bolt paterns are the same. I strongly doubt you'll find one, but they have to be out there, Chevy people NEVER throw anything away, they know better and I'm living proof. I got a 2 car garage packed to the rafters with stuff I don't even know what it is anymore. Hope this helps, jim

Pyro: Thats a good point. I never thought of that wee little issue, LOL. If it is a 2WD now Shamil is in for a real fight. Even the frame may have to be heavily modified on top of what Jott references. There ain't nothing a ton of money can't fix!! jim

Like greenlee I to had a k5 4x4 w/ a inline 6. They were government vehicles or at least mine was. If you wanted this conversion I would search for one of these at a public auction of gov vehicles.

it is a 2WD. let me give you a Brief history about my truck, as i said it is 292 engine with 4 manual trans.

years back one of my bosses had like a 73-75 chevy k10 with the six cylinder and 4wd. it was a plow truck and it ran fine and worked as sort of a site vehicle on a resort.. haul trash plow and some lite landscaping around the place.. the thing rotted away before it stopped running

4x4 parts will swap over, but you have to make templates and drill holes for it all. Best to have a donor truck for this.

The 2wd and 4x4 frame rails are the same, and as Pyro said, everything swaps right over.

However, expect to do a lot of rivet grinding, and hole drilling for everything. Also take a look under your seat to make sure that the floor hump is raised well underneath. If it stops at the seat, then dips down into a flat sort of bowl, you'll have problems with the transfer case hitting the floor.

You will need to cut a hole in the floor pan to run the transfer case shifter through as well.

Otherwise, it is fairly easy to do. I converted my 3/4 ton from 2wd to 3/4 ton. I personally found a 4x4 donor and swapped frames out though.

Also consider registration issues after converting it over...

one of my relatives did it years a go but an V8 engine, i checked the cost it is around 1000$ to swap my truck to 4X4.
i'll start seeking a donor to pull out all the parts i need.

Shamil, $1k ain't bad at all, considering all the parts you'll need and all the work you'll put in it. Just a reminder tho, make sure the new front axle has the same gears in the differential as what's already in yer truck's rear axle. Oh yah, also take lotsa pics if you can, we like pics and it will be of great help to the next guy who decides to do the conversion.
