Re: 1982 chevy 4x4 axle ratio
3.42 was common gear ratio in the 4X4s in that era.

Re: 1982 chevy 4x4 axle ratio
The 1981 showroom brochure I have lists the standard ratio on a K10 as a 3.73, unfortunately the 82 and 83 brochures don't list the available gear ratios. Keep in mind that the standard transmission in 1981 K10 truck was a 3 speed stick, in 1982 the 4 speed manual was standard. Available ratios listed for the 81 K10 were
3.73 standard 2.56 2.73 3.08 3.42 |

Re: 1982 chevy 4x4 axle ratio
It all depends on the tranny.....being it's a 1/2ton
If it's a 3 speed, I would say 2.56-3.23 If it was a 4 speed I would say 3.42-3.73 Duro

Re: 1982 chevy 4x4 axle ratio
The front differential should have a metal tag bolted onto the differential cover with a number. You may need to wire brush, or clean the tag in order to read it. That number is your original gear ratio. ...Joe

Re: 1982 chevy 4x4 axle ratio
..And if it doesn't pull the cover and there will be numbers on the ring gear and those will tell you the ratio..I'd just do it that way,the fluid probably needs changed anyway.

Re: 1982 chevy 4x4 axle ratio
Pulling the cover is the only for sure way to know. I don't think our trucks cam with anything lower (numerically) than 2.73 gears. The majority I have seen are 2.73 and 3.08 10 8.5 5 lug rears. I've not seen that many 12 bolts I have dealt much with the older ones. Mostly just the 81-87 2wd half tons.
My 86 C20 has 3.42 gears and a 700r4 stock. But I replace the 700r4 with a th350. |

Re: 1982 chevy 4x4 axle ratio
Axle code GQ1 - Standard ratio depends on the powerteam (combination of engine and transmission), drivetrain (4x4 or 2wd) and the GVW. You can't just say 4x4 standard ratio is x.xx, you have to take into account the engine and GVW. Some heavier half tons had different standard ratios than the lighter ones.
Like 1969k10stepside said, the best way is to open up the diff and look at the numbers stamped on the ring gear. It won't have the ratio spelled out, but it will have numbers of teeth on the ring gear and pinion, you just have to divide. Remember, these trucks are 20 years old at the youngest. Almost all have over 100k miles and could have easily worn out there original axles and had others swapped in somewhere along the line.
