My 69 C-10 Longbed
My picture seems a bit fuzzy. My plan is to make it a very clean daily driver. Install a motor and trans with bad attitudes.
I sent an email to Ron Covell aka Professor Hammer. Told him about my bed and door rust. Here is his reply, figured it might help someone else on the board. From Covell: It sounds like your truck bed is in sad condition, indeed! It's never a bad idea to strip a project down to bare metal to see what you're really dealing with. Sandblasting is a quick way to strip off rust, paint, and filler, but it takes an expert touch to keep from warping the panel. Understanding that the sides of your bed are pretty wiped-out to start with, perhaps this is a minor consideration, although a truly careless sandblasting operator could cause damage in areas that were OK to begin with. Another option for stripping filler and paint is to use a 3-M Strip and Clean disk. These are available from auto paint stores, and although they make quite a dust cloud, they can pretty quickly strip a panel. I use a pneumatic die- grinder to spin mine, and it does a nice job. Once you have the panels stripped to bare metal, you can better assess your options. If the damage is really 2" deep in large areas, I'd be inclined to lean toward cutting out the bad metal, and making patch panels to replace them. If only short-side replacement panels are available, you should at least consider buying two sets, and sectioning them together to make your own panels as long as needed for the long-bed sides. I know this will be costly, but it will probably lead to a better job. Ron |

It's hard to tell by the fuzzy pic but it really doesn't look that bad. For a daily driver, I wouldn't bother stripping the paint unless it has alot of cracks or other damage.
You can block sand it and apply a primer w/sealer before painting it.

Well Bob let me tell ya, the driver side bedside was target practice for cars going down the street. When my uncle had the truck it had been hit so many times. Back in the day you know how they did body work, lots of bondo and paint.
It has at least 1 1/2 of filler on that side alone. Beisdes the normal rust areas. Trust me, it needs to be stripped. |
