HELP - driveline question
I have a 72 K-10 that I just swapped a different 350 into. While I was doing this, I also pulled the transmission and transfer case to give everything a good cleaning and to replace all of the fluid and filters. Now that everything is back together the truck will not move in any gear. I have tried every gear on the transmission(TH350), and every gear on the transfer case. I am getting nothing. The torque converter is bolted to the flywheel, and the driveshafts all turn. I also ensured that the parking brake was not stuck. What could be causing this?

Re: HELP - driveline question
is it possible the T case shifter is out of adjustment? which case is it? NP203 or NP 205?
did you seperate the case from the trans? (missing coupler) is the converter full engaged into the pump? (I sure hope so, otherwise you will need a new pump now ![]() |

Re: HELP - driveline question
It is an NP205, and I don't think the shifter is out of adjustment. I did seperate it from the trans, but everything went back together the same way it came apart. How do you know if the converter is fully engaged into the pump? When I put the converter back on the transmission, it was fully seated, but when I bolted it to the flywheel, there was about 1/4" to 1/2" distance between the converter and the flywheel. Bolting it to the flywheel pulled it away from the transmission about that much. Are there any board members in the Bismarck, ND area that would be able to come over and help diagnose this with me? I have beer in the fridge, and heated garage.

Careful about what you offer Travis. That's an invitation to have 30,000 gearheads show up and drink your beer and scratch their heads.Hope it's a big garage.

All fluids are topped off, and all filters have been replaced.

Re: HELP - driveline question
If You Can't Fit Your Fingers In Between The Converter And Bell Housing, Then The Converter Is Fully Seated.WHAT DID IT HAVE IT FOR TRANNY BEFORE HAND?

Re: HELP - driveline question
It was the same tranny that was in the truck. I just swapped the motor, and pulled the tranny and t-case to clean them up.

Re: HELP - driveline question
put the transmission in park, jack up both rear wheels (use SUFFICIENT jack stands) and try to turn the rear drive shaft. it should not turn.
does the truck move if you put it in 4 high? |

Re: HELP - driveline question
I can just barely get my fingers between the converter and the bell housing. Since the NP205 is pretty much bulletproof, can I assume that something is messed up in the tranny?

Maybe you forgot to reconnect the tranny vacuum line?

Re: HELP - driveline question
OK, let's get down to bare tacks here. do you have access to a pressure guage you can screw into a 1/8 pipe thread hole? depending on your exhaust system configuration it may need a 12" long hose. I am gearing up to guide you through a pressure test on the tranny.

Re: HELP - driveline question
I think the first test needs to be to place the truck in park and with one rear wheel off the ground and transfer case engaged see if the rear wheels will spin......if so the transfer case is not engaged correctly. If you cant spin the one rear wheel that is off the ground then we can suspect the transfer case is engaged, and you need to go to the transmission like 68C15 is suggesting for a pressure test. Also if the transfer case appears to be engaged, start checking the shifter on the tranny to see if when the truck is in neutral that the rear wheel off the ground will spin or not.......this will also tell you that your heading in the right direction.
The reason I say one wheel is that if the rear diff is an open unit both rear wheels will spin even if the transfer case is engaged and tranny in park,BUT if the rear is POSI you can raise both wheels because of the way they will both spin together.
