Re: which bbc oil pan

My 454 and it's oil pan that I put in my 69 K20 came from a 1989 2wd 1 ton and the clearance was very close at the oil pan - I used a couple washers to raise the engine a touch. Without the spacers there was maybe 1/8" of clearance.

Offroad Desing has a custom engine crossmember which fixes this problem I believe.

BTW, can you post some pics of your engine placement? Did moving the engine forward 2" fix your firewall issues or did you do anything else?

Yukon Jack thanks for your reply.Height of engine is not an issue. The pan I have when the engine is lowered into postion the pan is against the crosmember and will not set down all the way.Have already ruined two crossmember trying to modify them to get engine to fit.Crossmember is the original sbc type. Here are a few pics.Guess I need to find a different oil pan and try it.

Re: which bbc oil pan

Could you get your hands on an 73-up crossmember? I think they give better oil pan clearance - PM burt4x4 to find out for sure, he was using one for a while with his bbc.

'73 and up mount brackets and x-member will fix your problems. When I put a GenV BBC in my '72 I pulled the pan and cut the offending area out and welded in a couple flat plates to cover the hole I created. It worked out good, but if I had it to do again, I think I would go with, at a minimum, the frame brackets for the '73 up and ideally make my own x-member or as a last resort, install the x-member for the '73 up.

Re: which bbc oil pan

If I had to doit again I would get DIY4X's first gen crossemember. Works great.

This is the 73+ crossmember it was a ***** to get in there but it worked, then it cracked. It was about 1/8" from touching...

Replaced the cracked one with ORD's x-member...still VERY tight, but not touching.

The engine does not move or twist in it's mounts, ORD engine mounts, so being so close doesn't seam to be a problem. But if I have to do it again the DIY4x solution is a much better fit with room to spare. I can't remember who it was that put one in..might be over at CK5 in the first gen fourm there.
Good Luck hope this helps.
Oh my oil pan is GM, not sure of the prt number as my engine guy scored it for me. It has the windage tray & flaps inside to help prevent oil sloshing about.

Did you have any issues with header or exhaust manifold clearance after moving your motor mounts forward? What are you running for headers if so? Do you have clearance issues with the radiator? Sry if I hijacked the thread.

Re: which bbc oil pan

I also run stock exhaust manifolds. Before you install them there is a little nub sticking out on the drivers side torward the front that you will have to shave off. Well I had to any way but I didn't move mine forward but it will save you some headache just in case.
