60-66 chev/gmc side window difference?
I have noticed 2 types of side windows, some with a black metal frame around them, and some without.
was this a chev/gmc difference? Or was it a year difference on the 60-63's? Last edited by jonzcustomshop; 03-03-2010 at 08:51 PM. |

Re: 60-63 chev/gmc side window difference?
The window with the band around it is laminated glass, and the one without is safety glass. Not sure what their reasoning was behind it, but both were used from 60-66 on Chevy and GMC. It seems like most of the pickups had saftey glass and most of the big trucks had the laminated glass. My 61' Apache 10 has laminated glass, and my 65 C80 big truck also has laminated. But my 64 C10 and both of my parts trucks(63 & 66) have saftey glass. I've had several of these old trucks over the years and seen lots more, but I'm still not sure what was the deciding factor as to which trucks got what. I think the laminated glass may have been a lower cost option on the cheaper trucks, but again I don't know this for sure. Maybe someone else can tell more.

Re: 60-63 chev/gmc side window difference?
bringing this old one btt.
so I have a bit more knowledge now, all the 60-61's I have come across have laminated glass and the metal frame, the 63's I have all have the tempered glass without the frame. I don,t have, and haven't gotten in any 62's yet, so I am unsure if it is 62 or 63 that was the first year for the tempered glass... now... another new development... I have 9 456's, the most recent, a 64 c10, I noticed has metal frames around the windows!? any one have any ideas? any other 456's with the metal frames?

Re: 60-63 chev/gmc side window difference?
That's a new one on me Jon. I don't believe I've seen any 64-5-6's with framed side windows. Are both side windows on the truck like that? I'm wondering if maybe the C40 and larger trucks had the framed windows?

Re: 60-63 chev/gmc side window difference?
To my knowledge, there are no factory 4-5-6 Chevy light-duty trucks with the steel framed window glass. I have stripped over 100 doors and didn't have one with the steel framed glass in the 4-5-6 era. Perhaps the door was from a medium or heavy-duty truck. I have never seen it offered in any of the aftermarket parts supplier's catalogs, so I am not sure the aftermarket acknowledges their existence or offers them.
Thanks for sharing the info Jon. Last edited by LILRED66; 03-04-2010 at 03:13 AM. |

Re: 60-63 chev/gmc side window difference?
yes both doors have them, and as far as I can tell this truck has never been apart.
this is one of the more unusual ones i have gotten. here is what it came in with: 64 c10 light blue with white stripe, and side chrome, no signs of ever being repainted. 230, or 250 6 with small radiator. factory sway bar factory/dealer? tow hooks factory/dealer? cab lights factory/dealer? hazard flasher 15 inch split rims "old" style rear end ( the front drops out, and the back cover comes off) like I mentioned, the truck seems to have never been apart, when I pulled the cowl panels off to get to the fender bolts, there was fresh blue paint under the bolts that looked like it hadn't seen the light of day in 46 years!

Re: 60-63 chev/gmc side window difference?
60-66 Nut mentions in his post (above) that his '65 C80 has the laminated (i.e. metal-banded) door glass. Looks like Jonz has "big" truck doors on his from the factory. Did they build the bodies for the light duty and bigger trucks at the same facility? Since we could literally custom build vehicles on the order sheet back then, could laminated windows have been an option?

My 63 has the frames. Do they interchange? Just curious.

Re: 60-63 chev/gmc side window difference?
Hey jonz, is it, or does it appear related to the glass style? There are clear, tinted, and smoked glass options. Just a guess.

Re: 60-63 chev/gmc side window difference?
60-62 trucks had the metal frames around the glass on all sizes. 1963 was the first year for the light duty trucks to go frameless of which they continued to be frameless through till 66. The medium duty and heavy duty trucks had window frames. Since medium and heavy duty trucks were higher off the ground and had the running boards at the bottom of the cab, the doors were better protected from road grime and dings and dents. There for they make better donors for the light duty trucks. 1964 introduced a bitimous pad to the inside of the outer door skin as a sound and rustproofing detail. If you want a nice hood, look for schoolbuses. They were mandated out of service sooner than the rest of the truck line. Better maintained, nobody did a Dukes of Hazzard slide across the hood cause they were higher up. The cabs are the same on the bigger trucks except for the L series that had taller cab supports to allow the engine to go under the cab. I think!

Re: 60-63 chev/gmc side window difference?
The problem that many of us with the "60-62" doors have is when restoring the windows, there are 3 small barrel screws that hold teh frame down to the lower glass channel. Over 45-50 years they are rusted and beyond salvage and almost always have to be cut out or otherwise removed and cannot be reused. Finding them are a real PITA. The closest I have come to them is the following link.
http://www.mcmaster.com/#stainless-s...l-nuts/=66wbdm My problem is selecting the correct size. Can anyone help, I'll use 6 and keep 6 extra and ship the rest to other members who need them. Anybody have door that apart and can measure for the rest of the group? Jake Groby Louisiana

Re: 60-63 chev/gmc side window difference?
My '62 and both '63's have frameless tempered glass and all three trucks were bone original when I got them. The '63 Chevy still is, but that will change soon enough!

Re: 60-63 chev/gmc side window difference?
My 62 didnt have them originally but the doors are toast! I have replacements from a 60-1? GMC c-60-80? oil truck that have the metal frames. Chevy is not the only ones who did this. I know early Dodge window vans did the same. The 64-66-7 modles had the metal framed side glass and the newer ones 67-70 had tempered frameless glass. How safe is the framed window glass? Does it break like a window on a house?

GREAT NEWS!!!
With Help from Arthur Throckmorton in Las Vegas he found the Special Screws that we need to fasten the frames to the lower Channel. Classic Parts http://www.classicparts.com/1955-63-...ctinfo/70-813/ I'll call tomarrow to see how many come in a pack and the details. Jake Groby

Re: 60-63 chev/gmc side window difference?
One of my C-10's has the frames and I'm pretty sure are original. They were both built in Freemont. The option list is 4A09AA Laminated glass and 4A11CB tinted glass 4Z61AF CUST APPEAR INCL and also has A/C.
I wonder if it was included in one of those options? |

Re: 60-63 chev/gmc side window difference?
I saw on a sheet that aerotruck63 posted somewhere that there was an option for the laminated glass, with the fact that it cost more I bet not many went for it
