Removing Spray-On Bedliner - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Our 69 GMC SWB has spray-on bed-liner in it (not sure what brand) and we would like to remove it completely. My first thought is blasting and that would be ok except for what it might do the the side and front panels (warping) and the cost could get $$$$$$$. Any ideas what to do here? I think my only alternative is sell it and find another bed, but I am not sure if there are any other alternatives. Any ideas?

Depends on how well it was installed. Sounds like a nightmare to me. I pity anyone whom tries to remove one of our GatorHyde liners. The stuff is meant to stay put. Blasting won't do it. 40 grit and a DA might give you and idea what you are up against. Good luck.

start scraping...for a long time if its a good liner

but why remove it?

is it bad...faded..what?

you may have to get rid of it the way i got rid of my pool. move off and leave it,lol. i have often wondered if they had spray in linner years ago, what would we be doing now on a rebuild. good luck

hell ive tried to torch that stuff off and if its installed right give it up..you could try actual acid but not alot can kill that stuff..good luck

My son used to be a rhino liner installer a few years back. I remember one time he had to fix someones mess up on a tail gate. It took him many hours of scraping to get the gate down to where he could spray on a nice coat of liner. He said it was one of the hardest (labor wise) things he's ever had to do.

I can't imagine doing an entire bed.

I had to remove some liner from a blazer tub to do some floor modifications. I was able to peel it off slowly by heating the underside of the floor with a propane torch and pulling up on the liner at the same time. It was the paint that actually let go. The liner still had a layer of paint stuck to it when it came off. It will still take you a while and some areas you might not be able to get the torch to.

This is what I expected--I am stuck with it. The reason I want it removed is we are going to convert the bed to look like a wooden bed only use metal. I guess that I will be looking for a good bed to take this ones place.
