Are you running an LT1

how many of you guys that have installed an LT1 have eliminated the mass Air Flowsensor. or how many have left it connected to your motor is there a advantage either way?

Re: Are you running an LT1

I am running an LT-1 and had the MAF removed. It runs fine with no problems. I read that it only helps when the engine is cold, but you may want to do some research if you are looking to get good gas mileage etc.

With the exception of the 92/93(Which were speed density) all GEN IIs were MAF. And while they will run without one....the PCM will go into "Limp home mode" or stay in "Open loop" and rely on the MAP and semi-convert itself to speed density. While speed density itself isnt bad and does work, a MAF will always be better and provide the PCM with more signal to keep your engine running well.

Speed density = Uses MAP(Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensure to read the "load" on the engine by the amount of vacuum in the engine, lower vacuum means your on the gas, which will tell the PCM to hold the injectors open longer to let more fuel in, advance the timing, etc.

MAF = Mass Airflow Sensor mesures the amount incoming air to tell the PCM how much air is present, which then it will increase/decrease fuel depensing on how dense the air is. This setup is more advanced, and requires other sensors/signals to be sent to the PCM for it to work right.

Limp home mode = Program built into the PCM, which incase of failure of a vital sensor, the computer will revert to. There will be no incrase/decrease of fuel or spark advance, there will be zero power and will run so lean that it can cause MAJOR damage to an engine. This program is mainly designed so that you can get your car safely off the road, or to a shop.

Open loop = Another PCM program, when you first start your vehicle. The PCM is usually looking at only a few sensors. And will be in a fixed fuel/spark advance to privide better cold driving.

Hope that helps....DO NOT RUN WITH OUT IT!

With Slammed70. Exactly as he said.

I have a '94 Z28 w/ LT1. Really sweet running car. It is computer controlled, i.e., with electronic engine management system. ALL of the various inputs to the computer determine just how well it runs - not the least of which is the MAF sensor. It needs the MAF.

Re: Are you running an LT1

I have a n LT1 out of a 92 vett with all factory sensors hooked up and working. Mine is not a MAF engine but if it were I would run everything as well. The people that think thay can delete everything and still have a great or even better running engine need to go work for GM. GM spends multi millions on their engine research and if you are better then them I am sure they would rather pay you half that and still save money
It is their for a reason, don't mess with it!

Re: Are you running an LT1

thanks Guys, I feel since you have these running and of course the obviuos
what Rokcrin points out about GM's experience that well if they studied and put it on the market, best not to try to short change the project. thanks again everyone

That is for the ECM, the MAF is a 3 wire pigtail, usually with red/black/yellow wires.

That connector is for the ABS.

You can find wiring diagrams at http://ss.lencolab.com/.

Harness photo at http://home.cogeco.ca/~chadoliver1/LT1HarnessLow.jpg. The PCM connectors are the large blue, black, read and clear connectors in the lower left of the photo.

Re: Are you running an LT1

Fyi - Some of the Caprice's have a 4.3 (W) V8 "baby LT1" Externally it looks just like the 5.7's but the cylinders/pistons are smaller.
