Tri-Y headers: Doug's, Stan's, Thorley, or??
Any experiences with any of these? Are there any other options?

Yes, from what I hear, for a < 6K rpm engine, they are a strong performer in low-mid range torque over standard headers.

I've had a set for 15 years. Very durable with thick flanges and 14 gauge construction.

Re: Tri-Y headers: Doug's, Stan's, Thorley, or??
Doug's and Thorley headers are supposed to be one and the same. After Doug Thorley got a divorce, his wife took over Thorley headers, while he resumed under the Doug's headers name -- or vice versa
I'd probably confirm which one Doug Thorley is actually running now and buy from him

Hi Jim: Just some additional pre-purchase information for you... I have known Stan and the crew for quite some time....they did my exhaust on my 71 502 powered Cheyenne and my 66 Chevelle. They do great work right here in Seattle and would recommend them to anyone. Their headers are top notch, laser cut flanges, 14 gauge steel (and stainless on request) and superb workmanship. Stan has been doing this since the late fifties and has a good history with Thorley since then. I also own FocuzTech Performance (the site you found Stan's headers on). We sell alot of his headers and do so in part to the quality product he puts forth. I have worked closely with him over the past several years, both in selling his product, and developing a few new products as well. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have regarding these headers (and would rather see you get them from us too!). Finally, the Tri-Y design will make a very noticeable, seat of the pants difference on a stock to mild motor that sees the south side of 6-6500rpm. I have Tri-Y's on one of my cars and can vouch for the difference. LMK if I can be of more assistance.

Gman69 has one type (I think Doug's) on his. There was a couple things he mentioned about them, but I cannot remember off the top of my head.

Re: Tri-Y headers: Doug's, Stan's, Thorley, or??
I just had the Exhaust done on my truck and went with the Dougs Ceramic coated headers They look good, sound great and I can feel the mid range difference. The stock manifolds and exhaust that was on it always felt sluggish.
I also had them do the X pipe, Flowmaster super 40's (under the bed) and ran them out the back. all in 2 1/2 and 3" tips. Even with the BB its quiet while cruising and loud under acceleration. I'll see if I can get some pics and maybe even a video sound clip in the future to post up.

I have a set of thorly headers on my panel, good quality and no leaks. Doug thorly owns dougs headers if id known it at the time i would have bought dougs headers, same exact product though.

Re: Tri-Y headers: Doug's, Stan's, Thorley, or??
We offer them RAW with options for chrome and Chromex ceramic coating. One thing to consider is Stan's come with gasketless ball and socket connections at the collector....you won't have to worry about leaks.

Re: Tri-Y headers: Doug's, Stan's, Thorley, or??
I went and ordered the Thorley headers.... I appreciate the reply though. What does a set of the raw ones go for? I may be able to call and cancel! --
I also ordered the Magnaflow 16643 from Ebay. I made a "best offer" to a guy for $400, and got it! A guy I talked to told me due to slow sales, the kit was going to become special order only... don't know if that's across the market, or just with the people I talked too, so at any rate, the price may go up once they aren't stocked.... I have a clip of my hooker's w/hooker mufflers... I'll have to do a clip with the thorley/magnaflow kit so we can hear how different they sound. thanks |

I Put Doug Thorely Tri-ys On My Blazer 10 Years Ago. I Went With Nickel Plated. I Never Had Any Problems At All. I Highly Recomend Them.

Looks like the finish stayed nice -- did you clean them often?

I Wipe Them Down With A Damp Terry Towel About 3 Times A Year & Hit Them With Chrome Polish Once A Year. There Is 1 Plug I Have To Use A Open End Wrench On.

Re: Tri-Y headers: Doug's, Stan's, Thorley, or??
click HERE for a vid of my Thorley triY's into an open Y pipe.
They interfered with my clutch, co I used some Hookers instead. EDIT; mine were from a squarebody, not sure about the difference.

Nice! -- Yeah, the instructions say some z-bar modification may need to be made, but I've already moved mine back about 1", so if I have to do a little more tweaking, I'm not too concerned. |

Re: Tri-Y headers: Doug's, Stan's, Thorley, or??
Dougs and Thorleys are essentially the same headers.. and Stans are "copies" of older Doug Thorleys.. I have had Doug Thorleys on my 68 for over 20 years, mime are "the hard chrome" nickel coating and even though it is showing its age they are still in good shape.. I have had nickel coated big tube Stans on my Big block Suburban for at least 12 years and they too are still in good shape.. IMHO all are comparable so I would go with which ever ones you take a liking too.

Where's the hooker/hooker clip I wont to run hooker mufflers, how do they sound?
I saw a video on the history channel on how they make headers and they featured the Thorley shop and the quality is hands down amazing, the work that goes into making a nice header like those makes me understand the price tag a little better.

They are true duals -no h or x, 2 1/2" dumping in front of the rear wheels. It sounds great. Just too loud for me, and I wanted a side-swept with x or h-pipe over the axle. I'll probably hang on to the hookers in case I ever get the itch to be super loud again Last edited by Jim_PA; 01-11-2008 at 03:30 AM. |

Re: Tri-Y headers: Doug's, Stan's, Thorley, or??
I know this is a very old thread, but how low do these tri-y headers hang below the frame?
I'm contemplating buying the tri-y's for a Chevelle to put on my 72 C-10 so the collectors are above the bottom of the frame. I've got aftermarket crossmembers so the exhaust will stay above the frame all the way out.
