90 vs 91 ECm's
For the 3/4 ton Suburban, was it the first year for the 4l80e?
If so, would it be feasible to buy a 91 ecm with trans harness and install the 4l80e in a pre91 equipped with TBI? TIA- John |

Re: 90 vs 91 ECm's
I believe that 93' or 94' was the first year of the 4L80. never available in the old style truck as far as I know, I would buy a stand alone controler, available at summit ETC They had throttle bodys up to and including 95' but I don't know if a ECM from a newer style would work?

Re: 90 vs 91 ECm's
cartman- thanks...I saw a 91 for sale and it said OD.
The truck appeared to be all original so I thought that if it was the first year it would be an easy swap |

Re: 90 vs 91 ECm's
1991 was the only year for the 4L80E our bodystyle, it was only available on the 1Tons as far as I know, but it could have been on 3/4T. The ECM has the controls for the 4L80E built in, so yes could use it in a 87-90 with TBI if you have the harness....

Re: 90 vs 91 ECm's
Appreciate the info...I am watching a few on ebay...there is a 90 locally that needs a trans. (t400 is gone...sounds like front pump).

Re: 90 vs 91 ECm's
1991 was the first year to use the 4L80e. It was used I knmow for sure in the 3/4 Suburbans and the 1 ton trucks. I have parted out 3 of the burbs and they were all 3/4 ton and all had the 4L80e trnas, 2 were small block and 1 big block 2 wheel drive. I will see if I can find the right computer from the big block. I know I have all the wiring from the small block that had the 4L80E, not sure what the difference was betwen them.

Re: 90 vs 91 ECm's
The ECM on the 4L80E is 16147060, same as what was on the 1993 454SS.

The 7060 is now superceded by 88999179, if buying from GM. The schematic shows gas w/4l80 and gas w/o 4l80. The prom prob has a diff prgram for the larger cubic inch. I would say same ecm. Last edited by ponjohn; 02-13-2008 at 10:05 AM. |

Re: 90 vs 91 ECm's
I took out the entire harness from the 91 Burb, do you need all the harness for thew swap or just the engine and trans computer wiring for the ECM?

Re: 90 vs 91 ECm's
It generates the digital speed signal. It is generally located next to the ecm, smaller box. The 90 has one but it is slightly different from the 91. Might be able to use the 90.

Re: 90 vs 91 ECm's
Here are some pics of the engine and transmission harness. It came out of a 1991 Suburban 3/4 ton 4x4 that had a 350 engine with a 4L80E trans. The engine had a knock on it and I am using the trans in my crew cab project. I can do 220.00 for the harness and computer and 20.00 for shipping. It looks like 2 wires were cut, they are shown in the picture.

You want the DRAC = (Digital Ration Adapter Controller) it should be located under the dash below the radio (little white box). It usually is just clipped there If you already have one you just need to recalibrate it, or you could ditch it and use a VSS. Found the link for calibrating...http://www.614streets.com/drac.html

Re: 90 vs 91 ECm's
Sorry to revive this, but I just bought a 1/2 ton 91 burb SLE and it has the 4L80E. It also has about almost every other option on it so maybe that trans was a special order for the 1/2 ton???
