friend painting flat black

my buddy is planning on doing a complete flat black paint job on his 78 LWB... whats you guys' opinions? i think totally flat black is too much. i want to show him some other pics so can we get some flat black LWB trucks posted?

I think flat black is just a quick fix. It looks good for a short period, but it doesn't last long. If you want the "look" then consider a satin black. It won't chalk up, streak, or turn ashy like flat black does.

Even the "satin" jobs don't last or hold up well...flats are much worse.

They can look good, but are not practical.

heres a couple more. the truck wasnt really flat black, it was john deere blitz black. kind of a satin

I never liked it much on these trucks but different strokes for different folks i guess. If he actually has spray gun and the whole bit or he's going to pay someone to do, then just buy some real single stage paint in a nice color. It will look good and stay looking good for awhile.

I would recommend using dupont hot hues hot rod black.

I am not fond of a flat black myself. But that is just me.

My Dad two-tone primed his, thats how he is going to run it. Your friend could do the same and give it a differant look.

im trying to tell him that he needs some chrome to offset it but he is insisting on COMPLETELY flat black

Flat/satin black tends to fade over time....and stains with grease/oil/finger prints/etc....
PPG DP90 epoxy primer is what alot of guys use....pretty durable....over reduce it and it'll flow out nicer and have a satin finish.....

I'm going to post an pic of my truck, It has been posted before. I left the chrome drip rails and chrome factory sport mirrors (for a while anyway) and accented in red and even put in a few button head bolts (to look like rivits) just to give it a different look.
Single stage topcoat with flattner added.

I've got a friend that is having his '68 Lincoln done in Hot Rod Flatz. Very durable paint, has a clear in it..

My truck ended up "Satin Black" because that is how I saw it finished. I spent allot of hours getting the tin straight and shaving the truck. I think these hours are noticable no matter what type of finish you end up with. Even "Satin Black" can look good over a well prepped body.

Yes, something is needed to offset the black. Tooooooo much black looks like a rush job, no time taken to mask off anything.

Most of what you're seeing posted here is single stage, but you can do a satin base/clear job by flattening out the clear coat. It's tougher to get it to look right that way though, because you can't "erase" any mistakes by buffing the flattened clear----you'll lose the satin finish if you do.
