so i did a search on side steps and can't find much.
there is a thread called "lets see your steps" with this picture.
i like the single step and would like one added.
what's the consensus on this?
i know mounting to the boxes is not a good idea but what is the alternative? (?back to the frame)
will one of the *carr* truck steps work?

any advice appreciated...

To attach the Carr steps you'd have to drill into the torsion box. Not how I'd want to do it. When I get my truck back on the road, I plan to fabricate an N-Fab style step similar to the steps on the Superduty below (sorry, it's the only picture I could readily find!), but attach it to the frame instead of the body.

yeah that looks like a good set-up. do they make that step in a single version instead of the long bar where you could use that and attach it at the frame.

how far back is it to the frame anyhow? seems like a long run, no?

N-Fab nerf bars attach to the body...and they don't make one explicitly for a first gen K5. They do make a single step, which is what I would do...the pic was just an example.

I think the run to the frame is about 1.5 feet, give or take a little. With the right tubing and bracing, you should be fine.

could be fabbed for cheaper i suppose but one of these might work as the step when connected to the body huh...i think their about $50 or so.

Those would work if you welded a receiver tube to the frame and maybe a gusset for a little added strength. Although you may have to offset the tube coming out from the frame to miss everything, not sure my tub is sitting on the shop floor right now...bummer.

i couldn't find a single step on their website. the length was over 80" on all the steps.

Check in the 4x4 tech section, there was a similar thread going on there but maybe that's where you got the pic from, dunno.

I kinda like those 'remote' ones, the ones the extend when you open the doors.

here are a few pics of mine, My blazer does not have rocker boxes and hasent since the late 70's, they were cut out for aux saddle tanks. no ill effects so far, doors open and close fine.

I did the CARR steps and mounted them to the rocker boxes. It is very easy and clean. If you do it right, I don't see any downside to this. I mocked up and marked the locations the brackets mounted to the rocker boxes. I then pre-drilled the holes and inserted 200lb drywall anchors into the rocker boxes. There are three per mount and each side has two mounts. I painted the drilled holes with rustoleum (sp?) and then mounted the brackets with the drywall anchor bolts. Then sealed it all up with lots of silicone. It is waterproof and the anchors distribute the wieght load. I don't think they would stand up to a three hundred pound person jumping up and down on them, continuosly for an hour, but getting in and out of the rig is going to be just fine. I saw all the arguments against it, and I just don't think anything bad will come of it.
