Th400 Id

I have a th400 trans i just picked up and i need help with the numbers.
On the tag it reads: 345 74-CM 5883
This is what i think so far:
345=day of production = Dec. 12
74=1974
C= Chevrolet
M= ?
5883= the 5883 th400 made in that year.
Do i have this right??
What does the M denote? I'm thinking application.

Cast into the case near the motor is a 13.
It has a 4" extension housing.
It has a "original GM looking" shifter cable and brackets on it.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Th400 Id

My listing doesnt have CM in 74, is this the tag on the side of the trans with one rivet holding it to the case? That is the one that tells what the trans has in it and came out of. I dont have a CM listed at all and the list is the entire run of TH400s.

Re: Th400 Id

Transmission rebuild book that has a decoding section in it. It doesn't say that is a th475 so it probably doesn't have the helical cut gears. Should have a deep transmission pan though.

Does it have a parking brake setup on the yoke? Any picture you could post?

Re: Th400 Id

It has a slip yoke, and its not there. So no parking brake. Sorry no pic.

Hello,

I assume you mean it does have helical gears, right? In my records (and personal experience), the CM code does not indicate a TH475. I have a TH400 ('79 date code) with the CM code. The records I have indicate that it came out of a 30 series mobile home chassis (as the one in question), but not a heavy enough GVW to have the straight cut gears. I tore it down anyway, only to find it has helical planetaries. I have also never seen a 475 with a slip yoke. Anyway, let me know if there's anything I can do.

Good luck,

Joe Schaefer

Yes you are correct. I ment to say does have helical gears. Looking at the CM listing again it states, 74-76 Series 30 mobile home chassis. So that is making me think more that its was a 1-ton truck with a slide in camper. It would need a CL or GT to be a Th475.

My whole family is from Williamsport, but moved to Texas in the 1940s. Do you know any Slonakers?

Sorry to get so off topic...

Sorry, but I don't know anyone by that name. Good to hear from you though, even if it is off topic

How long ago did you attend WACC? My Father has taught there (now Pennsylvania College of Technology) for the past 20 years. Just curious...

I went to WACC in 1985 and 86. Machine tool technology was my major.
