wiper motor ?

hi guys, im in the process of making some nickel and dime repairs. my '71 has a 2 speed wiper motor, slow and slower. what do you recommend as a replacement? parts store oem? LMC? Year One? other? is there an after market unit that's faster or a motor from another vehicle that may work better than the original?

I have never done this *YET*, but if you had a good one, you'd probably find that it is too fast on high.
I can't recomend a place to buy one.

I put one in from a Jeep Wagoneer. The switch had a delay function. The intallation is not for the faint of heart as it requires trimming the mount under the dash and changing the arm the wiper mechanism connects to.

However, it works well and I like the delay function.

Here is one thing you could do to upgrade your wipers and it is not hard to do. It won't make it any faster but will give you delay wipers. http://www.carolinaclassictrucks.com...wiper-kit.html

It won't cost you anything to clean the terminals and make sure the motor is grounded good.

i bought one from auto zone it think it was like 50 bucks.
you will need to keep the plastic vaccume thing on the side because it doesent come with one.

the vacume thing is the washer pump... not vacume.

Vet- i cleaned the electrical terminals and ground strap but no difference. i think 31 years of service has just wore it down but thanks for reminding me to try the basics first.

Low'n- i'll keep your Wagoneer motor as a plausable back up idea if i don't find a decent bolt on item. a little effort to make it work dont scare me. i think?!

'71C20- i have never been to that site so thanks for the heads up on it. that set up is nice but too nice for my rig!

i have other items on my shopping list for LMC, but i hate to order a motor from them just to find there's no speed difference. probably do a parts store purchase here, try it and see if performance is increased. Longhorn, if i stumble upon something good i'll pass it on to ya. thanks again guys. -steve

Just one little thing to add to what VetteVet said...If you have a DVOM, check the voltage at the motor when it's on high speed. There could be a voltage drop somewhere other than at the motor or ground. You should have close to battery voltage on the high speed winding (make sure you are grounding your meter to a good ground like the neg. post of the battery).

When messing with these, remember, the motor always has power, it is switched on the ground side.
So it dosn't matter what the switch is set on, you should always have 12 volts or so.

...That's me showing my frustration! I know a lot about electricity in general and a whole lot about electricity in BMWs but unfortunatly, I know less about how Chevy used to do things (less practice). I did not know that they changed the resistance on the ground side (Thanks Longhorn Man, I'm sure that info will come in handy some day!). The theory is the same though, you should have a 12 volt drop across the motor on high speed. Just put your red lead on the power side and the black lead on the ground side and you should see 12 volts. If ya don't, move your black lead to the neg. post of the battery and see if you have 12 volts then. If ya do then you have too much resistance somewhere on the ground side (switch?). If you still don't have 12 volts, then you have too much resistance on the power side. Let us know what you find and if you need more help.
