Coil cutting Q

Hello-

When cutting coils, does one have to cut a full coil off? Is it possible to just cut 1/4 coil until you reach the desired hieght? I'm trying to balance things out better untlil I can afford a better suspension solution...

Thanks,

Matt

Re: Coil cutting Q

I assume you're talking about front coils. I cut two turns off my 63, but if I remember right, the lower control arm has a notch for the end of the coil to rest in, but the upper doesn't. So half cuts will work.

Yes, you can cut partial coils off the bottom of the front coils even though some people say only cut full coils. I recently cut less than one full coil but more than 75%. My last pair of coils I cut 1.25 coils.

Actually, I was thinking rear coils... Is that dumb?
I have a torsion bar front and can get that pretty low...

Re: Coil cutting Q

You really can't cut rear coils. They're tapered on the ends and have retainers attached. Just go with a car coil. Some members here use Jeep, I have 70's Chevelle in the rear of my 63

Re: Coil cutting Q

Perfect! I guess I should have been more specific in the first post. Are you using chevelle rears on your truck's rear or cheelle front coils in the rear?

Chevelle rears in the rear. They have a similar (not exact, but close enough to work) taper on the ends. I'm sure the Jeep springs would be a lot eaiser to locate. Maybe someone who uses them could tell you which ones they used, Wrangler maybe? I just had the Chevelle springs so I used them.

Re: Coil cutting Q

I placed jeep coils on a friends 69 also and they worked great. You would be surprised to see that many companies coils arent that expensive anymore and you get exactly what your looking for drop wise.Check some board vendors for rear coil prices, and dont forget about rear blocks for a rear drop.

On your 83 if you cut one coil you will get +/- 2" drop. That will still leave you sitting nose high if you do a flip kit. You don't "have to" get a dropped spindle, but I would. I prefer to get as much drop as possible from spindle since it has no impact on the ride quality. From there I like to drop it with a cut spring

Re: Coil cutting Q

I used Jeep TJ rear springs on my 64,dropped it about 4 inches. You can get them pretty cheap if you go to a 4 wheel drive shop. I paid $30.00 for mine
