Going to pick up my gmc in the morning and the tells me tonight that it does not have a title! What do I need to do and how hard is it? How long will it take to get a PA title?

I would make him go thru all the trouble of getting the title or let him keep it, unless the price is so good that it is worth it just for parts.

In NY there were no titles for these trucks or anything else before a certain year around 73-75. You simply use the registration that you cary in your glovebox as proof of ownership. The registration will have a spot that needs to be signed to transfer ownership but i dont know what else is needed to transfer to another state. I may be able to find out for you tomorrow. Hope this helps some , jason

Call your local notry public. Thats what i always do when theres a issue like that. I dont take anybodys word for it. Then i go to THAT notry with all the paper work.
I've bought a couple trucks out of state and never had a problem.

It took me about two months and at least 12 hours of work to get my non-titled AL truck titled in LA. I would call the DMV and find out exactly what is needed and then get the current owner to provide all that is needed for you to register it. Here in LA, the taxes are much lower if you buy one from an individual out of state. You do have to have a copy of his/her drivers licence. This was something I found out on the 2nd or 3rd trip to the DMV.

I found some info on pennsylvannia's website it just says you need the out of state title and you fill out a title app. but it doesnt say anything about the issue of our crazy registration deal. I would assume that they would condsider the registration as a title because it says transferable right on it. Heres a pic to explain maybe

NH does not require title. I've done sales to states that do a number of times. Each state is required to abide by the others DMV laws. If NY does not require a title (ie exempt vehicle) you need to get a copy of NY DMV law stating this fact, PA has to honor this and issue you a PA title by virtue of copy of DMV law and bill of sale. I've sone this several times as NH is like NY and has exempt vehicles. Call your DMV and ask them the policy for "title exempt" vehicles purchased from states where titles are not required.

Question

Ok guys, thanks for the info! I have been all over those dmv sites and they are kind of vague! I called my local DMV and they told me just what CPNE told us. Need a document or letter saying that New york state does not require a title before 1973, I will need proof of ownership which I will require from the ny dmv, take all of that to my notary and they will process the forms necessary to get a title!
i hope things go well, this is a 3 1/2 hour drive one way!

CPNE, That was a very helpful post. I was curious what the answer was going to be and it sounds pretty simple now. Thats why this board is the best. Thanks

It was pretty simple as long as the registration says transferable on the front of it! I got a in transit plate(paper plate for in the window!) at the trucks local dmv for $10 and that was it! Things you need are an insurance binder, your drivers license, new trucks bill of sale (reciept), and the trucks old registration with it filled out on the back from the previous owner! Pretty simple it was now it is done and I dont have to worry about it anymore! I can just enjoy my truck!
