Newbi from Richmond - Check out the cage

I am in the process of restoring this jimmy. I had been looking for one forever. This one is more of a project than I wanted but I have been making a lot of progress. I just had the cage built and I am very happy with it. All seats are bolted into cage and the back seat is out of an 05 tahoe. I had the cage fabbed to clip the back seat in and out. This cage is stout. I gutted the interior and have been working on that first. I found a nice set of truck doors that I cut down and installed. They old doors were totally rotted out. I bedlined the interior and scored some nice leather seats. It's at the shop getting a new 350hp 350 installed. I still need new rockers and paint. I'm gonna stay with black.

Attached pic is the before.

Any body know some reasonably priced body guys around Richmond, VA?

I have really enjoyed this board for getting ideas. Thanks!

Sorry guys, I have been trying to upload pics of the new cage and it says they are too large? I am kind of computer illiterate. Anyone know how to shrink them?

Thanks

Thanks for the replys. I tried uploading to gallery. It said it was successful but still no pics?

Dennis, great to hear there is someone else here in Richmond! I don't think I have ever seen another jimmy on the road around here. I live off Hull street near Woodlake.

Re: Newbi from Richmond - Check out the cage

Its hard to tell from the little pic but it looks pretty sweet.... If you have Windows XP go to microsofts website and search PowerToys. There is a image resizer you can download for free. Very simple to use. If you have Vista you can download VSO image resizer off the web for free. Can't wait to see some pics and Welcome from KY!

Looks good.... I'd really like to find a rear Tahoe seat like that, I'd be happy with cloth, lol.

Re: Newbi from Richmond - Check out the cage

Welcome from Idaho! Very nice cage! Functional too! Does it take away from that "topless" feeling at all? That is my only concern. I want the protection without losing the open air feel. Be interested in your take on the cage. Like the seats. Was it difficult getting the front and rear seats to fit? Cheers.

Re: Newbi from Richmond - Check out the cage

I found the seat on craigslist $250. still had plastic on it from the dealer ,had never been used. I think the cage still has a very open feel to it and it feels more secure to me too. I have 3 small kids so I wanted something strong to mount the seat to.

Thanks

Re: Newbi from Richmond - Check out the cage

Facetime, I forgot to answer your question about having the seats fit. I had a local racecar shop build the cage from some sketches I made and they made it fit like a glove. I wish I had that kind of talent with welding. To me the cage is a work of art. You really have to see how nice he made everything fit together. He welded steel plates into the floor up front and welded nuts to the back of the plates to bolt the cage down to it so we wouldn't screw up the rocker boxes. The floor had rust in those areas that needed to be patched anyway so it worked great.

Re: Newbi from Richmond - Check out the cage

Welcome to the board.

The cage looks good in silver.

How's the headroom between the rear seat and to cage?
I originally mounted a stock seat like you did, worked great for the kids but not for an adult.
The stock seat has legs, so I'm guessing yours is gonna work fine.

Re: Newbi from Richmond - Check out the cage

Thanks for the welcome. Chuck it looks like there are a few of us around VA, I am up in the "burg" every now and then. vtblazer, the headroom is very good in the back. The rear bar is about a foot behind your head and it is about the same height as the stock bar in the front. I moved the back seat forward several inches for that reason and to give more storage room in the back. Still plenty of leg room. I had him make the front mounts on the back seat a little higher than the back mounts. So it doesnt feel like you are sitting on the floor and it gives you a slight recline.
