Vortec Engine Worth Buying?
Hey guys! Ive had major PC problems for a while now so been offline too long!!! I need some advice... I have access to a vortec 350 wih the center bolt heads (not aluminum) with less than 50,000 miles. It was removed from a local truck because it had a knock and had started using oil (he said not a lot but you know how that goes...) It is a short block (no intake water pump distributor manifolds etc) I can get it for $100...think its a waist>? I was thinking even if I didnt rebuild the motor the heads would be worth that...its from a 290 hp motor the best I can tell...the oil looked clean and no sludge in the valvae covers at all or the oil pan...what do you guys think?

It's definitely worth $100. You need to pick it up for sure.

Re: Vortec Engine Worth Buying?
Thanks guys! Im thinking it couldnt be hurt too bad...it was still running after all. I have a line on a super clean '69 2 wheel drive shortbed...Im thinking so hard about selling my '98 Z71 and buying it to turn into my daily driver. No major rust anywhere..green and white two tone white bumpers no trim etc...and no one can see it from the road or knows it can be bought! Im thinking with the money I get from my truck I could pay it off and have enough left over for a new transmission new engine and all running gear stuff for the '69. I love my '98 but one part can cost me $400 dollars so easily...our old trucks are so much simpler and so easy to work on mechanically...I put a new brake booster and master cylinder on it and spent close to $600...then there was the $450 fuel pump assembly...the $500+ tires...etc etc...I have my Camry my '72 Nova and Old Blue if it doesnt work out anyway so how can I go wrong???

LOL! You sound like me! I have a 2000 Z71 that sitting the back yard with a flat tire. Its only been like that about 3 weeks. I drive my '69 C/10 to work and everywhere I go. The only time I'm not in it is when I go somewhere with the wife and kids. I sure have been thinking of what all that money would buy for my truck! I guess I'm not the only crazy one out there!

Re: Vortec Engine Worth Buying?
its a good buy.
The only thing I can think of is what year is the engine. Back on the engines in 96 they had a problem with the crank and had a warranty item on it. They replaced the whole engine when that did the fix. There was a problem with the way the crank and main was made. It could be fixed by refacing the crank and bearings to .040. My uncle has 4 of these engines that are sitting there for his trucks. They will run fine as is just they make noise. |

Re: Vortec Engine Worth Buying?
if you are mainly interested in the vortec heads make sure they are vortec and not just fuel injected heads because they both have centerbolt valve covers. trust me carb intakes are not cheap for these heads and the vortec intake will not fit the fuel injected heads i found out the hard way!
the fuel injected heads have the 2 middle intake bolts that go almost straight down. and i believe the vortec does not have the 2 center bolt holes. |

Re: Vortec Engine Worth Buying?
I agree with 1978chev. Just make sure you know what you are working with. I have ordered parts for what I thought I had before only to find out what I had wasn't what I thought I had. But for $100 you really can't go wrong.
