What is 454 worth?

I posted this same question on the WIW area with no response.

I am looking at an 88 3/4 ton 2wd Burb for the interior. It has a 120K 454 and TH400. The TBI has been removed and replaced with an Edelbrock 4bbl.

Assuming the engine runs good with no smoke or noise could I reasonably expect to get $500-600 for it or would the figure be higher or lower? Would a decent TH400 bring $100-150?

Thanks

Re: What is 454 worth?

Any big block core is worth that unless something catastrophic has happened to the block
(well, except for those tall deck industrial big blocks -- 366's and stuff, i dont think they are worth that much)

Now that aluminum heads can be had for less than 2k, an affordable big block build is within reach of many, so the peanut port heads are not a big deal either (actually they make good power with a pocket-porting job too)

Having a one piece rear seal makes your engine an even sweeter deal for your would be buyer.

FWIW, i would buy it for that type of price if you were closer--

Do a search on the local craigslist. I would start at $1000, and come down for the complete 454, with accessories and all.

Re: What is 454 worth?

Hello,

My suggestion here would be not to cheat yourself. Not sure what your market is there, but a running 454 here would bring in at least $1000. I bought an '84 K30 ambulance chassis about a year ago. I bought it only for the 454 and Dana 60 front axle. The seller was asking a mere $1200 (desperately needed the space), but took only $600 for the entire truck, minus the TH400 and NP205. That's no misprint; only $600 for a perfect running 454 (only 38k miles on the truck), Dana 60, dually 14 bolt, all 6 budd wheels, etc. We can't all be as lucky as I was though . I had an offer for $1000 for just the big block before I even closed the deal (hadn't even seen the truck yet at that point). Needless to say, I didn't sell, not even for $1000. I know another guy that sold a 454 for $1500 (running, but in stock form). As for the TH400, if it's known to be good, it's worth at least $250. A local yard sells them for $300 here. Anyway, I'd hate to see you lowball yourself. Good luck.

Re: What is 454 worth?

Thanks for the input. The guy was asking $1200 for the complete running truck, sounds like I could get my parts and make a couple $.

Re: What is 454 worth?

around here 3-600 is about what almost any chevy motor goes for. For 8-1200 dollars I can pick up 3 diiferent vehicles with 454's and 2 of them have 400 turbos (2 c-10s and a wagon)behind them and all run fine. I just do not want the problem of parts sitting(small shop not enough room) while I am trying to sell them. Likewise the tranny's are btween 100-200 dollars around here..
