2000 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 drop?
Hey guys. My dads got a 2000 GMC Sierra EXT cab 4x4 that i drove through my last 2 years of highschool. Its got the torsion bar setup in the front and i was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to drop the front and how far? I think ive found spindles that are supposed to work that are 2 inches and then LMC has torsion keys that are adjustable (1" - 2"), but they say their for the suv's, and i wasnt sure if these would work? For the back i would just do blocks and shackles or a flip kit or something...thanks, sorry for the long post...how bout a coulpe pics...one of as is, one of maybe...?...
BRAD

Nice truck. Sounds like you need to convert it to 2wd and go from there.
Who's truck is for sale in the background?

Or...you can get the AWD transfer case out of a SS, Denali, Escalade, etc...and convert to AWD. That'll shut anyone up who wants to criticize you for lowering a 4x4. Don't forget to remove the Z71 sticker.

Re: 2000 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 drop?
How low are you wanting to go?
Up front you can do spindles and/or drop keys. Both will get you about 2" each. For the rear you can get a flip kit, shackles, hangers, or drop leafs. I'd start out with removing the block and then go from there. After you remove the block and you decide that isn't low enough make sure that you install a bolt in notch on 5 or more inches of drop. If not it wont be a very good ride..... If you need any more help PM me or post up here

Re: 2000 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 drop?
The truck in the background is mine, the main reason we use the 4 wheel drive isnt necessarily for offroading but really just to get through conditions a 2wd wont, like snow. My parents own a small piece of land in wisconsin and to get to it there is a rather steep windy gravel road, nad in the winter, 2wd just doesnt do it, that and doin some sweet doughnuts in the highschool parking lot. Really i would just wanna o for like a 3-5 drop or maybe a little less, i just dont really like the way the fenders are so far above the tires, im sure somebody knows what im talkin about. Of course this isnt my truck, but i might somehow cut a deal with em and sometime make it mine, but for then i suppose...thanks guys...

Re: 2000 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 drop?
The problem that I see is the compression stops in the front end. I read that one of the reason that lifted chevy's with the torsion bar suspension ride all screwy is that they lift the suspension up off the compresson stops. GM engineered them into the spring system. They are not just bumpstops. They add to the spring rate of the front end torsion bars. Take a look at the front end at normal ride height. The compression stop are touching the lower a-arm, aren't they? It might be fine if you pull them out, then measure the opening and cut off a portion of the stop. I'm not sure if this would cause problems or not.
One of the lift companies, either Superlift or Skyjacker include spacer washers to maintain contact with the stop and lower a-arm. I bet it would pretty tough sitting down low. What size tire are you running? My 99 Z71 has 285/75/16's and they don't have a lot of fenderwell space, although much more than the second image you have. they just kinda touch a little bit at the back side of the well at full lock. Yea i was wondering about those "bumpstops", but never figured out how it really worked. I guess now i know, and yes they do touch at ride hight, and i see the dilema. Im not quite sure what size tires they are, sorry, im 3.5 hrs from the truck right now, sadly, so i cant really check it out...thanks...

You probably won't be able to get it anywhere near as low as the second pic, but these may help:

No need to convert it to 2wd, not sure where that comes from.
There are kits out there for 4x4 trucks, let me dig up a few links. |
