Re: Spare wheel & Jack
The jack should be on the passenger side cab corner next to gas tank.

Re: Spare wheel & Jack
Thanks sameyrasmea72, this is my first truck and i've only had it about 3 weeks, so my questions may seem a bit basic, but im on a learning curve here.
Any idea were the spare tire was kept...slung underneath, or fixed in the bed?? this truck came with only the four wheels and no spare, and there is no sign of were I should put one when I get a spare for it. Thanks again |

Re: Spare wheel & Jack
The spare is mounted under the bed behind the diff. The mounts get removed pretty often and most spares end up in the back.

Re: Spare wheel & Jack
I haven't seen a spare tire on one of these trucks in years! If they aren't in the bed, they don't have one. I know, I know.....but I quit carrying a spare because of the faith I have in the tires I am running. Doesn't mean I wouldn't be in trouble if I had a blow-out....just means I wouldn't have a spare. With 245-60's on the front and 275-60's out back, my choice of a spare is going to be decided by the front.
Did you find a bug deflector/shield for the front of your truck, or did you decide that it is nothing to yearn for? I was wrong about the lack of trim on the lower edge of all of the hoods (bonnets) from '67 to '72, and a reply corrected me. If that is your truck in your avatar, it looks nice. Mine will be black, but not soon enough.

Re: Spare wheel & Jack
Thanks ChevLoRay (great name) my truck just got off the boat from the U.S on the 9th of this month so im tryin to find out as much as I can about how things should be as far as, whats missing and were it should be, and of course all the things that don't work like gauges and stuff....but thats half the fun.
I would'nt have lost much sleep about the bug gaurd, but yeah if there was a polished trim part that belonged there then I would have been looking for one, did someone tell you that there is a piece of trim on the Bonnet? (Hood) That is my truck in the Avatar, looks good at a distance but the paint is badly chipped and scratched, and all the body trim is either bent or dented but i'll get to all that eventually, your truck looks mean from that angle, I love the older grill best. |

Re: Spare wheel & Jack
welcome to the board, mate!
like ChevloRay said, the spare is usually gone, and.......the jack and the jack handle are usually gone too. there should be a spring mounted to the floor behind the seat (passenger side). the jack mounted horizontally there. the jack handle was encased in a vinyl cover and stood upright in the passenger side cab corner. again, there should be a spring mounted on the inside of the cab corner that swings away to clamp down onto the handle. the 67-72 Factory assembly manual will show all the particulars. may be hard to get one over there, but you may get lucky. Good luck and again, welcome!!! Cheers!!!

Re: Spare wheel & Jack
Thanks for the warm welcome tcb-1, you guys have a really great forum and freindly comunity here....well it looks like im in the market for an origianal Jack and the cradle for the spare....so if anyone knows of one or both for sale I will buy them, and of course I will cover all shipping cost to the UK, the spare I can get here just needs to be something that will get me home in an emergency.

eightbanger, unless your going the perfect restoration route, I'd pick up a hydraulic bottle jack you can get at most parts stores. as far as the spare goes, you may look around for an full size American car/truck at the salvage yard and get a temporary spare. They are lighter and easy to "hide". If your looking for all original bits, they may be hard to come by even over here. I was lucky enough to get the original jack, jack handle, and bits of the vinyl bag when I bought my truck, but it kind of rare to find them in "useable" condition......

Re: Spare wheel & Jack
You're right Doug it would be easy just to go down to the nearest auto store here and pick one up, but it would always niggle me (english term) that it was the wrong size and shape and did not belong with the truck...it's just me I always get a bit anal about these things, and I won't be able to use the retaining springs that are there to hold it in place, no no im going to loose to much sleep over that one LOL!
I won't be to fussy, it's got modern alloys fitted which im happy to leave on. Nigel... (Don't laugh my mum choose it) |

Re: Spare wheel & Jack
I can't believe that one of us board members would dare to be anal when it comes to our trucks. Imagine that!! The very thought of anything being any other way is scary, huh?
I don't have a jack, although there's still the pasted-on diagram of where it should be and what it should look like. The spring is there, but no jack. The owner's manual (reprint) will show you what it should look like and where it should be stowed. So, Nigel, you bought a big-block truck from the States and had it shipped to "Merry Olde England".....takes some chutzpah to drive that over there, right? Me, I lust for my '60 Triumph TR-3, that I had when I was 19. That's been a while!! Then, there's a lot of vehicles in my past that bring about the same feeling. I couldn't begin to fathom the progression of events that would find me waiting at the docks for the unloading of another TR-3, intended just for me. It had to be like Christmas, your 21st birthday (if it is as noteworthy in the UK as it is here), the birth of your firstborn, and the day you got married (if so) all rolled into one event. Lucky bloke, eh?

Well I'll tell you how it was and try to be quick, I had favorite searches from Ebay coming in everyday, and a couple of classic car websites that I would visit to check on there inventory and although the bay turned up quite a few that had most of my wish list ie Black, Cheyenne, 67/72 the one that sold me was in a classic car dealers in Illinois, and he even had a video of them putting it through it's paces....you can still see it i'll put the link in...so I rang them and did the deal, and now i'am commited to see it through to the end. That was in late Sept and it took all of Nov and bloody Dec to get here and to close to Xmas for me to collect as the docks closed for the hol's, so had to wait till 9th Jan to collect, took out insurance on vehicle with the details I had the Vin# etc so I could drive home, got the train to the docks and it was bloody raining as per, and this guy says "you here to collect the Black Chevy truck", he dissapeared for a while and I heard this rumble which turned into a thunder and this Black thundering yank tank appeared, well guys it's true, my 21st, wedding, firstborn and Xmas felt like they had all happened together...could'nt wait to sit in it, rev it and drive it like a kid, you know? So then the Homer Simpson moment comes I haven't got a licsense plate its not road legal "Doah" £150.00 = $300.00 later it was on the back of a tow truck to take us home. Here is the link... http://www.classicmusclecars.com/cgi...lable;;sb-make... I think I was sold at...we

Re: Spare wheel & Jack
Homer Simpson moment?? How does that work in the UK? Like we don't have them here, huh? So, how is it to drive the "Yank Tank" on the streets of your town? Do little old ladies shudder and shuffle as you rattle the windows? I'm thinking the Austins and Vauxhalls would be cringing at the sight/sound of such. It's gotta be a trip!!
Best fish and chips I could muster was from Arthur Treacher's in Tucson (!!???) in '70. You know it just wasn't right..... My Bonneville was a '64 Pontiac ragtop, also in Tucson. Honduras Maroon, black top, black leather, no air conditioning. Did I mention Tucson??? Can you say, dayumm, it's hot?? Top up or down....didn't matter as long as the sun was up. Couldn't make a deal on a new car because it had no a/c. Wish I had it back. I wanted a Tiger Cub, back when I was in Junior High school. But a Bonnie would be nice, or a TT. Heck, Beezers are cool, too. Maybe a 441 Victor??

Back to the original question.... Here is a couple of picture of the jack & accessories bag mounting. The bag is the white thing standing up in the corner of the cab. It has the jack handle and lug nut wrench in it. I will post some close up pictures of the jack, jack handle, lug nut wrench, and accessories bag in a separate post. LockDoc

Re: Spare wheel & Jack
I wish I knew what it was like to drive round in the truck, its still awaiting its age related British license plate, buy the middle of next week I hope i'm just waiting on the pencil pushers, don't get me wrong though I have had a sneaky drive round my block, and it is a beast, power steering is extra lite would rather it were a little stiffer.
But those that seen and heard looked on in amazement, I did have another classic american before, that had been converted to righthand drive, it was a 65 Buick Riviera, this is my first left hooker, I had to keep the wheels of the drivers side in the gutter as I couldn't judge to well my distance from the on coming trafic which of course is coming toward me in the UK on the right...thats going to take some practice. So im driving on the left side of the road while sitting on the left side of the car...don't you just luv seat of the pants driving.

Re: Spare wheel & Jack

I have posted these before but it is easier for me to post them again than find my other post.... The bag is made out of a plasticized foam and sewn along three sides, then turned inside out so the sewn seams are on the inside. LockDoc

Re: Spare wheel & Jack
LockDoc Is there a flap on either the front side or back side of the open end of the jack bag?
If a person cut two pieces of material of the dimensions you've shown (plus a little extra to allow for the sewn edges) would that be an accurate reproduction?
