I have the option to get a 700r4 for free from a 86 c4 vette. Is this transmission worth rebuilding? One more question how much can I get for the suspension parts off of the vette? Thanks in advance.

If your after a 700r4 the corvette ones are the ones your after. I would say it's worth it if it's what you want.

Please let me know if you are not going to use it. I've been thinking about switching my turbo 350 over to a 700r4.

Corvettes and 5.7 camaros and I assume T/As have pretty much the same trans don't they? I do know that they are different in the fact that they have the ability to stay in overdrive at wide open throttle. Other 700R transmissions will kick in and out of O/D. It seems that the valve bady is different.

700R4'S built after 84 I believe are the good ones anything earlier and it will need some work to handle any real power. I could be wrong on the year break though..

The ones built after 87 are the best ones. They have the 10 vane pump, better input shaft & beefed up internals. The mid 80's are the no-horsepower years, & hence they didnt need to make the trans very beefy either. If you are going to get it rebuilt anyway, then the 86 is fine because they will update it with the newest guts anyway. If you are going to drive it, then get at least an 87 or up. I blew up my origional from an 85 Camaro & it lasted 6 months. I traded it for a rebuilt one from a 91 Suburban & it lasted 13 years under my heavy foot. I just found a good description here:

Anyone know how to tell the difference in years of the trans without removing it? I know about the input shaft, but seems like a lot of work just to check.

There is a serial number on the side of the pan rail. Also, the newer pump has a certain casting number - you need to pull the torque conver to id that.

Thanks guys. Anybody know how much it would cost to rebuild the 700r4 in the San Francisco bay area.

Expect to pay around 1600 for 450hp & 2600 for 800hp. I'm not sure what they'll give you for your core though. If my memory serves, the Corvette 700r4's of that era dont have the conventional mounting pad on the tail shaft housing. It' an easy swap to a normal tailhousing though.

On mine I just put a TH400 mount front to back instead of cross ways like a normal car.
I did to make my own crossmember for other reasons.
Last set of 'vette suspensions I had went fairly quick for $750.
