How to narrow the third member in my 75 GMC
I was thinkin about narrowing the rear housing so i can fit wider tires to look like a pro streeter. I've got P275/60/15's on it now, and they are not even wide enough for my taste. It looks as if i can fit another P275/60/15 between the set i have on there now and the frame. So if i do some fab work on the bed to widen out the wheel wells, i could fit some pretty massive meats up under there. When i starded the ground up resto a few yrs ago on the frame, i took out all the rivets and removed the spring brackets to clean them up between them and the frame, and bolted them back on. So there would be no problem with removing them again. Im not happy with the drop i got after i installed the shackle and hanger drop kit, because i still have atleast two more inchess i want to drop it. If i go and do a flip with the axle above the spring, the truck will be to low in the back. So now im intrested in the prostreet look, but dont really want to put out a grand right now, to slap a 4-link set up in my project, when norrowing the rear end is gonna cost some pennies. So i guess my big ? is, has anybody ever tried putting the spring hangers on the inner side of the frame so the lief springs will be out of the way when i put the wider tires on. I can put a drop lief in there to get the 2" more im after. The trucks not gonna be used for hauling anything because its just my toy. I do want to do a 4-link in the future, but not right now.

Re: How to narrow the thurd member in my 75 GMC
Back in the day Weld had draglites and Prostars that would give the tubbed appearance . 15x12 with a 7.5 inch backspace and you could run a 29x15.5 or a 31x16.5 Mickey Thompson tire . the only modification was widening the tubs . The leaf springs stayed in the factory location and the ride was still factory .Modern Radials take the place of the Bias Ply Mickeys but the 12 inch wheel with the right backspace might save you a load of money . Re: How to narrow the thurd member in my 75 GMC
Thanx for the responce, the thing is i want to stick a tire so fat in there that its about a inch or two from touching the frame, and the inside of the fender flare. If i dont worry as much about dropping the truck anymore, atleast i should still have a firm stable feel to the ride since the springs do have that real thick helper lief on the bottom.

Re: How to narrow the third member in my 75 GMC
I have seen it done, but the results were not favorable. I was at a local truck shop and saw a truck with the bed off. Looking at the frame I could see that they had mounted the stock springs, hangers, etc in the inside of the frame rails. I asked what they were doing to it, and he said putting a 4 link in it. The owner wasn't happy with the way the rear set up worked so they were fixing it.

Thanx for your responce, which was just what i was looking for. There another article that i found on this mod which is where i got the brain storm from and thought id put it out there to see how it did. I guess ill just steer clear of that idea and wait untill i can spring for a 4-link.

A ladder bar setup might be better for your needs than a 4-link
