Power Steering

Hello, I'm new to this site but have been building since the late 60's. I'm stuck on power steering mounting for my 71 shortbed. I used the engine out of a 1972 suburban (350) took the pump off while redoing the engine and cannot figure out how to mount it. It's the late model pump,I think there was a change mid year and cannot find any info or pictures. I might be missing a bracket. Is ther anyone that can help with some info, hopefully pictures. The pump is used from 73 on up. Thanks

Re: Power Steering

here's a real-world pic. I was told mine came from somewhere in the 70's, and I'm not sure it's 100% correct, but anyway...

Re: Power Steering

65 on 24's, that would be the top pic that was posted. 72 and older. If you look at the diagram you can "see" where the pump would mount and the adjustment bolts are at the rear of the reservoir top with a slot, bottom as a pivot.

Re: Power Steering & alt. Mount

I hope someone out there has a 1972 suburban with the later power steering pump and the 350 engine. I took this engine apart about 4 years ago and am just getting back to putting it back in my 71 shortbed. I cannot figure out the left side mounting for the p/s pump and alt. The brackets I have I cannot for the life of me figure out how they go. It's driving me nuts and I've been building since the late 60's. If I mount the power stering the alt won't fit and if I mount the alt the power sreering wont fit. I know all od f the a/c mounts on the r/s of the engone

Re: Power Steering

Can you post a picture of your brackets? Does it have a short or a long water pump? You said it was a later pump which one would assume it was a long pump. I am also assuming you have drilled heads.

Re: Power Steering

The two different diagrams shown in this thread are #1 is for a short water pump. A short water pump was used in all of the Trucks, Suburbans, Blazers, and Panels from 1967 to 1972. If the engine that you took out of your 72 Suburban has the #2 style pump and bracket, it is a transplant from either a Chevy car or 73 and lator Pickup, Suburban, or Blazer. It is a pump and brackets for the long water pump. The alternator sets on the passinger side of the moter with that style power steering pump. I will take a picture in a bit to show you how everything goes. WES

Re: Power Steering

I think I have the same style you have. Does your pump also use the bracket that bolts to the motor mount? Unlike the the first illustration posted.

When you reply to a thread, scroll down to where the additional options box is. There you will find the manage attachments button. Click on it and it will bring up another box that have browse buttons on it. Click the browse buttons, select your picture from your computer and when done click the upload button. If your pictures are small enough, they will upload onto this site and all you will have to do from there is to click the submit reply button. If they are too large you will have to shrink them and try all over again. WES

Re: Power Steering

Looks like you have a short water pump and are trying to use the power steering pump and brackets for a long water pump to me. WES

Re: Power Steering

The pump I took off is a short pump I have the old one and all of the pulleys I have line up to the short pump. Does that make sense???

Re: Power Steering

You are using the short style water pump alternator brackets, and the long style water pump power steering pump and brackets. They will not work together. The power steering pump gets in the way of the belt for the alternator. You need to find the short style water pump, power steering pump and brackets. WES
