steering shaft question
I understand what holds the steering column on the truck, but what holds the inner shaft in the column? what keeps if from sliding up and down?

There is a spring on the bottom which pushes the lower bearing upward, (also, pulling the shaft downward) . The spring is held in place by a large washer which is held in place by the joint on the shaft extension.
On the upper end the steering wheel holds a spring against the turn signal canceler which fits against the upper bearing. So to answer your question two springs reacting against each other hold the shaft in place with the help of the steering wheel and extension shaft. Jim

Here's a picture of the lower seal - the clip holds the two shafts together. The second picture is the joint underneath the seal.
