Shop/Garage floor
The more I think about floor coatings and/or coverings I am leaning toward sealing the concrete and calling it good .
Its all so expensive . I have never had a problem with the look of concrete. Some of the coatings are really cool though ! I read alot of posts over at the Garage Journal and there is some fun stuff over there . But I am wondering whats worked for you here ? coated ? snap together ? tile ? sealed ? stain ? Its a garage who cares ? (I'll be sanding , painting , welding , parking , spilling stuff etc. etc.)

Re: Shop/Garage floor
I know of a shop, He jacks and constently has firetrucks and other big equipment is his garage. His floor coating is that Rustoleum epoxy floor paint from Lowe's and it has held up better than I thought it would have. Of course the main thing is like painting a car. Have to have the surface clean!!!

Re: Shop/Garage floor
This is what I recommend:
http://www.ashfordformula.com/ It is a sealer/surface hardener, easy to apply, becomes one with the concrete so it will never peel up or scratch. It prevents dust, resists all but the most harsh fluids, and really does get better looking with age. I like the look of a well done concrete floor (I have been a finisher for 25+ years) and with this stuff, it looks like there is nothing on the floor, until you have a spill, then whatever it is-it just wipes up without staining. It is the best stuff I have come across. Ashford is a brand name, I'm sure there are others, but any concrete supply house will know of it.

Re: Shop/Garage floor
I never had a coating. I did have a rough floor in my old garage. Now mine is just plain concrete. I like it because its smooth and easily swept clean.

Re: Shop/Garage floor
The vocational school I go to was brand new the year I started there I was in machine tool by Christmas time the tile floors were torn to sh!+ I will never understand why they put floors in the classrooms of the programs that had shops I think it was really dumb. My dad was the business manager of the school district and he did not get it. If you seal it some of the best sealers solvents will cause it to lift. Then become sticky.

Re: Shop/Garage floor
our garage is sealed and have had no problems and has held up to everything except rust eater.
when we build out shop we are gonna do a big burnout from front to back, then seal it and have that there forever

Re: Shop/Garage floor
I had mine epoxied and it looks awesome but its not very durable.I like how you can mop it and wipe up spills, but last night I worked on my truck using jack stands and it scraped the epoxy off everywhere the legs touched the floor.I still love the floors though.

Re: Shop/Garage floor
Just spoke with the Seattle area rep he quoted approx 18$ per ga. , not bad
compaired to some options . I need 6 gallons and it comes in 5 gallon cans . Might use left over on attached garage ? I am leaning this direction !

Re: Shop/Garage floor
Keep a few sheets of ply wood laying around to toss on the floor when you are welding or dropping heavy metal pieces onto the ground. It'll save the finish and keep from chipping the cement.

Re: Shop/Garage floor
My garage floor is epoxied also and I agree it does chip fairly easily. I use my wifes cookie sheetpans under my jackstands. The look on her face was priceless when she saw where her cookie sheet pans were. Chris

I like that idea ! I thought about building up a work area for welding above slab but a moving sheet sounds smarter .

Re: Shop/Garage floor
It's how we keep the floor at work nice.
NOTHING gets hammered on the floor, no torching, welding, or dropping heavy parts unless there is ply wood down. Seems to work. |

Re: Shop/Garage floor
lol
I was just at lowes looking at what they had for garage floor paint... The ucoatit on tv and website looks nice, but pricey. I'll keep looking for something more affordable, maybe the rustoleum or quikrete brands look decent.

Re: Shop/Garage floor
Their floors are colored concrete. It probably has a sealer on it , but the color is not applied, it is in the concrete.

Re: Shop/Garage floor
Like Andy said and have some cardboard layin' around for oil changes etc. I have 12x12 1/2 ply for jackstands to sit on. Little things work to make it easy to keep clean.
