Need some help saving my 68
OK the upper windshield channel is rusted. I need to change out the windshield for because it's fogged. However the window channel is rusted.
I need some help locating either patch panels or windshield lip so that I can keep her going. The windshield fogging is getting worse and I need to make this happen soon. Any help on this would be great. Thanks in advance... |

Re: Need some help saving my 68
if your talking about the retaining channel there is a company that sprays molten metal in to rebuild it and they come to your vehicle rustbusters.com,for Car Craft(April 2007) it was cheaper than what the body shops quoted , not sure you can buy replacement pieces - everything I've ever seen was custom bent and welded in.

My truck has the same issue, and I was planning on purchasing the Brother's piece. Good luck with removing the rust...

Re: Need some help saving my 68
You will all be happy to know, or at least I was. The windshield channel is almost perfect. I'm so happy..
Should only be about a 24 hour turn arround on the repair. It doesn't look to bad at all... Hope it goes back together as easy as it came apart. Continue to wish me luck.... |

Re: Need some help saving my 68
Well - that is good news - that should save you quite a bit of time...
make sure that you clean out the surface rust (if present) and use some sort of treatment on it to keep it from coming back... |

Re: Need some help saving my 68
Will do, I hate the fact that the best body work and nicest paint on the truck is going to be on the windshield channel.. But it's all progressive.. had to make sure that it was worth putting more time into... IT is and I will...

Re: Need some help saving my 68
I have the fogging too.. What causes that? I was hoping some sort of detailing might fix it up?
Am I wrong - is it only to be replaced to fix? |

Re: Need some help saving my 68
The fogging is caused by moisture between the glass plates. The only fix is replacing.

Re: Need some help saving my 68
The windshield is laminated safety glass. The fogging occurs when it starts delaminating and air/sun gets to the plastic or vinyl or whatever material it is sandwiched between the glass.

Re: Need some help saving my 68
You know some times you think that your on the down hill run to a project.
So I called Safelite Auto Glass and they said no problem, they put me on the dispatch list for today, or so I was told Tuesday night. This morning I called to follow up and well it will be Thursday and probally Friday before they could get to me. Not wanting to tie up my friends garage I called around and paid a little more to get it done today. Now I can put in a window, but I thought that if I put it in and chip it or it leaks I'm paying for the repairs. So to have it installed I thought was the right way to go. The glass shop called and said they have the seal and window and would be there at 1 pm to install it. They showed up and struggled for about 30 minutes only to find out that they seal that they had was the wrong on it was for 71-72 now for those that don't know the difference it has a more shallow trim moulding. So here is my options, A) I can have him install the standard cab moulding with no trim B) Or wait 3 to 5 days for him to order another moulding. Well needless to say we went with option C) Which is my personal favorite, install the incorrect seal and I order the correct seal to ensure that it's the right one. They will reinstall the correct seal with moulding once the seal arrives. So $50 more to have them come today, $40 for the right seal. It's not done yet but it's in the driveway with new glass and wrong seal. I spoke with several of the large glass companys that do a great number of installs and just this morning was told by at least 2 of them that the seal for the Custom cabs is no longer available. I wonder why they would pass along this information. I made a few calls and I had to order one. But it should be here Friday. Back to the glass shop on Saturday for the right seal. And so it begins......... |

Re: Need some help saving my 68
Ok kinda revied this post from the dead zone. New seal arrived the next day from Harmond's it was great and went in like a piece of cake... been driving the crap out of it.... and well it started to get a little tired... leaking oil... no matter howmany new seals I would add...
So after several weeks of weekend work at the garage.... here is the new motor...... It will continue to live on...... |

Re: Need some help saving my 68
TBI or Vortecs? Looks sweet! Usually as is the case, you can spend time and do the fixes or just spend the $$$ and be done! You probably had quite a bit of time, labor and $$$ trying to fix the leaks, and now you have a new motor and no leaks! Sweet ride! More motor specs?! Please??

Re: Need some help saving my 68
Actually, it's a 90 something roller block, however without sticking $$$ in it I went with flat tappet cam and the heads are cast I guess they say early crate motor heads basicaly 1.94's (64 cc)the intake is off of a 302 chevy it's a 1969 Camaro high rise. the block is .030 with hypertec (sp) rebuild kit. I got lucky becasue the mains and rod didn't need cut. so everything is standard size. Only other problem I ran into that I didn't expect was on a roller motor, in the front where the timming chain botls up there is a raised area. On the non roller motors it's recessed. On the Roller motor it isn't. Didn't present a problem till I tried to put the timming chain on, chain hit the block. Called the machiene shop and they said that they normally cut that down when the block is in. But because I was already built that I would have to either do it myself or bring it in to them... After some time I figured... well I do have another block if I screw this one up.... went after it with 4" air grinder and imagine this it worked...
Go no idea on the horse power, it's got and Edelbrock 1405 on the high rise which is a dual plane as well... with good heads and headers.. I have only punched it one time and it was enough to let me know that I don't have the transmision or suspension to drive it like and idiot. It's kinda like a Gorilla trying to throw you back in the sseat... Runs rather well and gives you that goofy A$$ smile you can't get off your face after you drive something that is really fast.... I LIKE IT! |
