67-72 Theme Garage
On the 25th of this month I will be purchasing my first home. More importantly my first Garage (20'x20'10'). So I was hoping you guys could share some ideas and pictures of how I can make it look as good as our trucks and very organized. A couple of ideas I have been thinking of are; checkered floor, bow tie boarder on the walls, auto parts stool, above head storage, old style gas pump painted on the wall, vintage signs & parts, and most importantly a urinal

Re: 67-72 Theme Garage
Parts on the walls is always a great idea. Signs, pictures, painted on themes, painted/snap together flooring,....
Be sure to have plenty of storage units, you might check at Sear's and Sam's they have some pretty neat kits that you can build it as you like. Be sure to post some pics and we might be able to get a better idea of what we're working with.

Re: 67-72 Theme Garage
DITTO. I have the original tailgate (with dealer sticker) and the original steel (matching) bumper with dealer name stamped in it, and the original glove box door in my garage. Plus other 'truckie' stuff. I have a roll pan, a pair of disc-brake rotors, license plates, etc.... plus old tools & signs.

Re: 67-72 Theme Garage
You better add 20 feet onto the back of it so that after you get all the above stuff in it you'll still have room to park your vehicles in it.

Re: 67-72 Theme Garage
The kitchen is behind the garage, but what the heck who needs a kitchen anyway. It would be nice to extend things out but there is no room. I am going to build a little shed in the back yard to keep all of the lawn junk out of the garage. The basement has a large storage area also. So I am hoping to keep as much cluter out as possible. I just want my tools and garage art in there for the most part.

Re: 67-72 Theme Garage
since the kitchen shares a wall with garage having your own "mans" bathroom is easier, heat and A/C always nice ,a little fridge, and a stereo is a must.

Re: 67-72 Theme Garage
If you have never had a garage before, you will soon learn that it ain't big enough. However big it is, it ain't big enough!!
A friend built a shop that is 30x60. After doing that, he added onto it with a 20x30. Both buildings are full!!! You should erect a wall to separate your half, from the half that will be your wifes'....and she will have half of it. It may be YOUR garage, but it's hooked onto your WIFE's house. When she wants to store something, it will end up in YOUR half.....trust me on this one. Proud you are getting a home. Congrats!

Re: 67-72 Theme Garage
Agree with that…..Garages are never big enough. Other than tools there are some standard equipment all truck guy garages should have…….
1) Beer fridge made to look like a tool box or something other than a refridge 2) A 67-72 GM truck or any other GM truck(s) 3) License plates, GM signs, posters, banners, etc on the wall 4) A loud stereo 5) Wireless internet 6) Nicely done floor. I do not recommend Quick Crete Epoxy as 18 months later it looks 20 years old. 7) Resident Rotweiller garage dog and security system 8) Room to expland 9) Empty windshield wiper or antifreeze jug is a pretty good alternative to a urinal.

Re: 67-72 Theme Garage
I have a 30x30 and would just be happy to be able to fit all my projects in and have room to turn around. By the time you get the truck (off the frame), the Tbucket, lawn equipment (need a shed), and the spare parts, and tools in, there are no walls left due to shelves to decorate. And that still leaves two cars out in the cold. Maybe I have too much crap. Hope the wife doesn't see that remark.

Re: 67-72 Theme Garage
I've always wanted to cut the last 6" or so from a box and mount it to the wall with the bumper mounted as on a truck so it looks like it's sticking through the wall. Then open the tailgate so I have a place to sit and BS! I could just imagine being able to turn on the taillights for a little something extra!

Re: 67-72 Theme Garage
if you are still in the building stages, make sure you get an extra 220v outlet in the garage in case you ever want to run a decent compressor or welder

Re: 67-72 Theme Garage
Thanks for all of the replies!!!
It has already been built but it won’t be hard to run the 220V, I had not thought of that. I am going to be able to tap in to my washer drain and vent fairly easy so a sink and urinal are as good as done. I have a 70 grill, original set of hub caps, center dash panel, Tailgate, tinted chrome wing windows, Blazer console, Am Radio, 72 door panels and headliner, chrome edelbrock valve covers, Old 3'x5' metal gas Sign, enough 10" oak shelves to fit a entire 10'x20' wall, stand up tool chest, air compressor, ceiling TV mount, wireless router. Thanks for the www.garagejournal.com site. It has some great ideas.

Re: 67-72 Theme Garage
Every garage needs a good workbench so you can collect crap (see picture). Go to your local carpenter or door shop and ask for a junk solid core door. They will usually give you one dirt cheap. Then wrap it with stainless or galvanized sheet metal. Perfect work bench, just remember to support it well. My dad is a mechanical contractor so getting mine made was fairly easy.
You also need a garbage can. Empty grease barrels work and look great. I painted my floors with rustoleum epoxy shield garage paint. If you use it, put on twice the amount they say to use otherwise it will wear down to the concrete fairly easy with vehicle traffic. |
